Is anyone using the Mackie onyx with protools? Im thinking of going this route via the firewire option. Any advice would be helpful.

Im thinking possible going digi 002 console but I like the size and features of the Mackie.

thanks

idiot on board

just realized its in the wrong section - cant change it :(

I don't think mackie hardware is supported by protools. Only digi and select m-audio gear (with m-powered), iirc.

it should work with ProTools LE

but seriously, who wants ProTools LE?

Will not work.

Pro Tools only listens to its own hardware. You could use the Onyx as an analog board feeding a pro tools interface, but the firewire option won't work.

If you like the Onyx you'll need to look at other software.

Take care,
Chris

ahh, that's shitty

but...the onyx firewire card comes with tracktion, which is easier than shit to use, but i wouldn't recommend it for larger projects - i did a mix yesterday with 12 tracks and lots of DSP shit going on, and the CPU usage got wayyyyyyyy out of control. i don't see how that program could handle 16-24-32 tracks simultaneously - at least not @ 24/96

24/96 is hard on most any computer!

But yeah, Digidesign's product philosophy is the source of much debate and frustration. If I didn't need "Pro Tools" for work I'd much rather have the options offered to me by others systems. Currently to upgrade my Pro Tools rig to more than 18 ins and outs I'd have to spend on the order of $20,000! Upgrading to all of 48 stereo tracks is $400...

If I ever need that much power I'll dig out Cubase again and use that. :) Meanwhile, I've paid for my digi hardware a couple times over with the work it got me so I can't complain too much.

Take care,
Chris
