Hi

Looking for some monitor feedback here....(no pun intended!)

I have Alesis M-1 monitors which don't give me a very true reading on the low freq. Thinking about selling them and getting the Mackie 824's, which have larger driver than the M-1's. But, they are very expensive!! Anyone already using the Mackies now? Are they worth the $$$ ?

Or, any other good quality monitors out there which are self-powered, 8" drivers, and not so expensive? I don't mind paying if they're worth it. Thanks!

I have a pair of Event TR8XL that I like very much.
They have the TR8s which are nice. The XLs are the same speakers, but w/ a bigger amplifier. Worth checking out.

Thanx Picker, I'll give em' a try! Another friend of mine also said those sounded good. I just want to have a few options when I go to the music store to audition monitors.

I am very happy with my HR 824s. The low end is good, but you need to be careful about the transient response, which is slow. Of course, my favorite thing is that I no longer get the headaches I used to get when I used NS-10s. Like any other monitor, the key is to take the time to learn the sound of your monitors.

I use the 624's and they are awesome...if I get them to sound good the mixes translate well everywhere.

The 824's are only supposed to be better....

im using 824's......I love em. I'm also using NS 10's.......I hate em lol......but they help out for other reasons. I actually like how the transient response off the 824's low end, because it acts like a sub would, therefore you have reference to what a sub would sound like or act like with your mix.

not necessarily. lots of subs designed for recording studios focus on tight response more than extreme bass.

plus, the poor transient response of the Mackies also affect a bit into the lower midrange, which isn't good regardless of how you look at it.

i personally am not a fan of the mackies at all.

I was refering to the non-studio designed subs. Like the majority of what consumers have in their living rooms or cars.

I have the Mackie's and they translate pretty good most of the time. I also check the mix with NS-10's too. I have a pair or the Alesis in my pre-production room and they really don't sound that bad either. The ROOM has a lot to do with your mixes as well. If you are looking for a cheaper solution, I'd try a consumer (probably 12") sub with your Alesis rig. If nothing else, kick it on once in a while just to hear what's "down there". I don't think that the Mackies are going to be the be-all-end-all monitor you are looking for, although you'll hear a big difference in imaging, phase coherency and spatial relationships as compaired to the Alesis.

I'm also a firm believer in doing A/B comparisons with my favorite big-label recordings. Does your stuff sound like the majors? If not, make adjustments until it does. I'll run a CD through two open channels and pop back and forth between the two while I'm mixing.

You can mix on almost any good monitor if you know it's tendencies. For example, I know my NS-10's are a bit harsh so if a guitar part starts to sound a little bright on the NS-10's I know it's going to be WAY over-the-top on other speakers.

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated!

It's just that I'm trying to get a mix that will transfer to other sources, like my stereo, boombox, car stereo, etc...and sound relatively close on all. The problem I'm encountering with the Alesis M-1's is obviously they're missing the lower frequencies, so when my mix sounds good on them, then I play a cd-r elsewhere, I'm always too heavy on the bass end. I have been going back & compensating, then burning another cd, then listening, burning another, etc...but I'd rather not have to waste that kind of time if I can help it. Also, my M-1's are the first version they came out with, and I think they now have a slightly larger driver on the newer ones. I guess a sub would probably help, just have to decide how much $$$ I can afford!
