mackie mixer question

I use Cakewalk and have a audiophille 2496 card and record mostly modern hard rock. I'm thinking of getting the Mackie 1202 mixer. I can't afford an Allen and Heath and Guitar Center doesn't carry Soundcraft. Does soundcraft have a board for under $500? I'm only recording myself so I'm not looking for alot of channels, just good sounding pre's.

Mackie is ok for you...

I don't own it, but a friend has a Mackie VLZ1202 pro and I used it a few times. It is a really good piece of gear, my friend and I used it a lot...he still uses it to do his recordings...he goes from there to 8 separate tracks on his Delta soundcard SIMULTANEOUSLY...you won't get that in any other console in that price range...

In a more accurate answer to your question, he has an AKG condenser mic, and I own a Rode NT2...and we have no complaints about the preamps...

They do the job very well... if you want to record yourself it will be a good choice...check other stuff too though, some people will say you should buy it...some people will say you'd better get a Behringher and so on... try it first if you can, but if you can't then you can be sure is a good tool.

Anyway, if you bet in this Home recorder vicious way of life, you will be hunting some better & bigger gear in a few months and then again, and so on...and so on...till the end of the world...HAHAHA

or...

you can buy a really nice sounding pre (maybe two channels) for a lot less cash, or the same amount...anyway you will do the mixing in the computer...that's another choice...

Do you really need a console? check out samash.com or any other site and look for pres in that price range...

Soundcraft has the Spirit M-series of mixers. The M4 would be comparable to the Mackie 1202vlz & should sell for under $500. I can get the M8 locally for $600, so the M4 should be under $500.
