On the 1604 there are 8 direct outs as well, which would be post-eq.. not sure about the 1402 though.

Ya, but a Bherringer Noise Gate only has enough for 4 Channels anyway.

What i would do would be to use the 2 XLR Inputs on the VF-16 for a couple overheads, then I'd take those tracks and send them through the Mackie later on and EQ them, and record them to new tracks then replace the originals.

A couple extra steps, but the job gets done.

I can alsways take the recorded tracks and send them throught he Mackie and EQ them, re-record them as new tracks and replace the originals.

I've already spiced up some old drum tracks with this approach.

I'm not sure why you'd bring the tracks out to the Mackie just to EQ them. Why not use Cubase to EQ? This will give you flexibity in choosing EQ settings w/o the hassle. Also, you're adding another set of A/D and D/A conversion just to EQ which may noticably degrade the tracks.

You could probably get away with four mics to record drums. Start with the two OHs (although I've been told you can get away with just one) and try to get the best sound with those first. Then add mics to what you're missing. Not enough kick? Hook up the AKG. Not enough snare, hook up the SM57. With proper OH placement, this may be all you need.

Well, Im not recording the drum tracks into Cubase. I'm recording the drums at a remote location witha Fostex VF-16.
I don't like relying on the Fostex for EQ.
I have much more control with EQ on the Mackie, than I do with the Fostex. Especially Low bass frequency's.

After I Gate, EQ and mix all the drums on the Fostex, I SPDIF that as a Stereo Mix in to a CUBASE TRACK.

I really havent noticed any noticeable degradation in sound doing this though.

Ace, go to Ebay and buy the 1604, I did and have had no regrets. But scan the auctions for a week and you'll see that some 1604s go for anywhere between $480 with a couple of years of use to $800 almost new. Make this purchase instead of going with the Berri and you won't regret it.
