Hi,
I was just wondering what a good brand was for machine heads... I don't want anything flash like locking tuners, I just want some good quality machine heads that won't let the strings slip too much. I've had Gotoh and Schaller in mind...

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Stan

Gotoh 510's. They are expensive, but they are the best gears on the market, by far. They are the only gears I will use on my guitars.

Dag! Those are like twice as much as other decent ones. Aren't there any that cost more?

In my experience, if you think that the machine heads are slipping (your guitar is going flat), your problem is most likely something else. Even cheap machine heads don't typically slip. Are the knobs on the heads turning backwards? The way tuners are usually constructed (worm gear through a pinion with a keyed shaft), the only way the peg can turn is in concert with the knob rotating.

Ditto ...... tuning gears are a worm gear which basically can't slip. Better gears have a smoother feel and can sometimes permit finer adjustments ..... but even cheap gears don't slip at all unless they're actually broken in some way.

Yes, Waverlys are more expensive, but they don't work as well.

Rebuilt a customers,Epiphone, LP Outlaw while back..When I removed the tuner covers some of the worm was in pieces; but would not slip. Bought new Grovers, and they were Great. The tuners I took off were 41 yrs. old, but still worked.

Recently bought one of those mini squire strat novelty guitars and the tuners seems like shitte at first. I was going to replace them, but started counting up all the shitty sets of tuners on my shitty guitars and fell asleep with my shoes and socks off.

Anyway, I took off one of the shitty squire tuners and lubed with with some white lithium grease and losened the screw that goes through the post. They actually worked much better. It is possible to adjust shitty tuners. Who knew?

Grover's work really well and I think they are cheap. My favoritre guitar is loaded with Sperzel's but they're expensive.

Here's the website for Grover

Light: They're way too expensive for this guitar.... its only a practice guitar, a Squier Bullet Special.

ggunn: Yeah, I'll get the guitar checked out before I purchase new machine heads.

Dumby: Thanks, I'll take a good look at them.

Thanks for all the replies.

Are there different sizes for tuner posts?

I've got an Epiphone Vee-Wee that I want to fix up,and I want to change the tuners, but I'll probably just order them and I want to make sure I'm buying the right stuff.
