Mac or PC for a Pro Tools Le System?

I've been planning on upgrading from cubase 3.7/starting over in other words, to Pro Tools, and planning on building a new PC DAW. Seeing as complecated it is on picking the right gear, I'll throw something else in the mix.

Upgrading to a Mac. I've never touched a mac, nor used one. I don't know anything about osx or what ever it's called these days. Since I believe in doing things right the first time, should I just get a mag G5 or what ever the current G-version is, and digi 003 and be Done?

I am a life long Mac person. I've been using Pro Tools and tech supporting systems for years now. I'll always have Macs as my personal machines.

Last year my Mac G5 dual 2.0 gig HD system began to show some signs of weakness in the soft synth side of things. Digidesign has made it difficult to upgrade HD systems to Intel Macs. The cards don't fit the new PCI slots and the cost of new cards and a new Mac got close to 10 grand.

On the Digi forums there had been lot's of talk about Quad Core PC's and outrageous performance claims. The spec'd out Quad Core PC was roughly $1500.00. A far cry from the $10.000.00 it would cost to upgrade my HD system.

So for soft synths I decided (for the first time in my life) to give PC a try strictly for running soft synths.

It was an extremely long and painful road to get all the components running. At least 6 months of pulling teeth adjustments. I learned a lot about PC's (something I've always wanted to do) but it was a difficult road for sure. Faulty video card, Bios under powering ram and a thousand other little nagging problems.

Running like a top now and crazy powerful. A Mac would have been up and running from day one. The PC really took 6 months to hone and there were times when I thought I'd give up.


Mac if you can afford it. PC if you're patient and willing to tweak endlessly

I was in your boat a year ago.I was going from an alesis adat setup to an 003 with the controler.I chose the mac g 5.I was new to a mac and thought It would be hard to learn but It was quite easy.I have recorded lots of singers,bands and myself and never had a computer problem or a crash.It is a rock solid setup.check out my studio at www.sterlingsoundstudios.com
 
I don't think the Mac operating system would be difficult to get to know, but Mac's will have issues just as PC's do.

Everyone has their own personal experiences to tell. I've never had a Mac although I've seen a nice Mac Pro in person and I did like what I saw. And the guy showed me the desktop and a little about the operating system.

I've only had PC's and mine have run great. But I know how to take care of mine and treat it well. I keep it lean with no unnecessary fat, and my most recent machine is all newly rebuilt with good components all the way around. Probably didn't even cost me more than about $900 to boot. Runs great.
 
It is really up to you, I run protools on both a windows setup and a mac setup, now with that in mind I like the mac setup best because I haven't had a problem with protools crashing or needing to restart and I am using an older mac. So if you can afford it go with mac a bit of a learning curve but better a learning curve than hardware issues or constant crashes.
 
I made a wish list a few post back with components from newegg.com If you dont mind, chk it out and see what you think and if it will work.

The only reason I like pc is that I can swap hard drives or anything else inside it..no need to use firewire or usb!!! And I can build a pc in 1/2 an hour..Cant do that with mac!!
