Here's my suggestion. Take one of you newest mixes, and post it in the mp3 clinic. You will get TONS of help for FREE. If you need somewhere to host your file, you can use www.lightningmp3.com (yes, once again, I am pimping myself :D )

You are off to a good start. Just keep at it.
 
I've listened to your clips, and I agree in most part with what the others are saying. You need to just keep doing it, get some experience under your belt and improve on your own for a while.

The best way to do this is to record your own band, and if the guys in your band want to record something on their own, do that for them. Then, they might have friends that want something done, or another band that plays in the same club might ask to have you do a song for them. Basically, as your experience grows you'll have people come to you in a natural manner, wanting you to record them.

I don't think the traditional "build it and they will come" approach is the right one for you, at least for right now. As far as the money, I think that will take care of itself. Again, the traditional concept of building a studio and setting a fee schedule doesn't seem to me like the right way for you to go. Could be wrong, but that's just my impression.

Keep recording your band, and if someone wants you to record outside of that, make a deal with them at that time.

Hell, I only charge $50/hr. I have been doing this for decades. $25 would be fair.

Damn, I live in a town with a studio that charges less than $40 an hour (daily rate). They have an API legacy console, a CRAPLOAD of outboard gear, a fantastic mic locker, and an incredible sounding space. Gold and Plat records on the wall.........

in a genral sense, lower then 15$ an hr and you may as well get a job a mc donalds.
no responsibility, no need to be devoted, no possibility of personal loss, and you may even get some crappy health insurence.

but the market the way it is more then 25$ and there is probably plenty of way more qualified people out there for nearly the same price.

Lots of competition here. I couldn't imagine the OP getting anywhere near $25 an hour here. I think the highest rate around here is in the $75 range, and that's for a lesser studio than the one mentioned above, but they have a 5 million dollar Russ Berger room they gotta pay for (sorda - but I won't go down that road...)

Farview's work is great. I wasn't trying to say anything about that. In fact, I would pay $50 an hour for the quality he gets rather than pay $25 for the OP's quality of work. But, thats me.......

EDIT - Crap, they raised the daily rate by $100. I just looked at the site not a week ago! Now they are getting around $50 an hour on the daily rate. Joe Chicarelli uses the studio a lot from what I understand.

Things are rather more expensive aound Jay's and my parts. But the catered stuffed pizza and Vienna hot dogs you get in the green room alone are worth it! :D

there's a studio near me, and it's very nice don't get me wrong. neve and the hole nine but.....

750$ a day digital
1000$ a day to use tape. (tape not included)
both prices are sans-engineer

am i wrong to think that that's insane in 2007?

and what's up with 250$ a day to align the tape machine? (or whatever it's for)
never heard of that before.

That is nuts. The studio where I apprenticed had a Trident console, the rooms were designed by George Augspurger (I was like George who), has Neumann Mics, Avalon Pre's, Urei 1176LN's, yadda , yadda, yadda. You get the picture.

No Doubt recorded their first album there. So did Dwight Yoakam. Paula Abdul, Ringo Starr, Lou Rawls, the Specials, Melissa Ethridge, Trisha Yearwood all recorded there. Not the most prestigious Recording Studio in LA, but certainly a very good one.
He only charged a $100 an hour. Engineer included. This is in North Hollywood, Ca. mind you. Not BFE. He said most people get burnt out at about five hours. So about $500 or so a day. This was 2004, though.

It was all to ProTools HD, though. He has a Studer tape machine. But he said nobody wants to use it, ever. He said he didn't miss degaussing tape heads. I wouldn't know. My career started with a Tascam US-428 and Sonar 2 (when it was brand new).

How do they define a day? If it's literally 24 hours, that's only $35 an hour for a multi-million dollar facility.

The extra for the tape is because you are putting milage on a very finicky and expensive piece of equipment.

So you think it sounds worse than the samples this guy posted? Or do you think the songs he did could be tracked/mixed in 5 hours or less?

edit: I hope you didn't mean my Telefission stuff, since I know you added Telefission on myspace.

You can still tell a professional sounding mix from an mp3. It's not like you're taking a stab in the dark.

The studio that I last mixed at was "$1,000" a day, card rate. The card rate doesn't totally mean that's what you pay...Major labels will pay that, plus the place is a multi million dollar facility with a lot of platinum records on the wall and vintage gear that no one else has in town.

The band paid about $450 a day for 3 days, and I was in there about 16 hours each day.

As for the extra costs for a tape machine, replacement parts are hard to find and are ridiculously expensive.
