I am in the process of buying a new mic for my home studio. I will only be recording vocals (rap) i'm wondering if i should get the M-Audio Solaris or the Audio Technica AT4040 Cardioid Condenser Microphone. i see both online for $299. any advice would be great. :)

head to your local store and set them both up...bring your preamp if you want...

slap on a pair of headphones and see which works best for you

thats not practical

Wow that seemed a little unprovoked, he was just offering an opinion. Some people can actually do this but still ask here.

Had the Solaris. Great drum overheads, Real nice on acoustic instruments. Not a favorite on vocals. I don't have the 4040 but I do have the 4033 which does a good job for vocals.
I'm not sure about NYC but here in Jersey most stores will not let you try out mics on vocals. Against health rules as I've been told a number of times. Which makes no sense at all as most of the big chain stores love to sell "vintage" mics, but that's another story.

I have a 40440 and a pair of 4033's. I like the Mid size better.

i could manage that on long island...so i can't imagine you couldn't find somewhere in NYC

I've never used the Solaris but just considering that all the studios Ive been at or heard of mic that rap groups use I've never once came across someone that used the Solaris... On the other hand I know at least one successful underground rap group that used the $300 AT mic. And AT is widely known to be some of the more used mics. AT definitely has a name for themself when it comes to mics. So just based on the fact that more people and even professionals use the AT mics to my knowledge (since i havent even heard of anyone using the solaris) i'd say go with the AT just on the theory that it might be better...

Sorry I couldnt be more help. And the guy you called a jerk, that was uncalled for. He was just suggesting to experiment yourself and the reason for that is... no matter what mic we say we like better chances are it would be better for you to decide yourself.

I'd personally go with the AT even without having ever used the Solaris. But out of all the mics I've used there is only one that stands out with my voice and it was the blue baby bottle mic. See thats just my preference.

Another thing that will impact how GOOD your mic sounds is the preamp used which is also why the "jerk" said make sure to test it with the preamp your going to be using. Because you could get a really good mic with the cheapest preamp and it wont preform upto its best capabilities. ANd you could do the opposite too. Get a really cheap condensor mic with a really good preamp and you'd be surprised how good it can actually sound with some eq'in and compression.

My advice go AT... but thats just based my love and trust in AT mics. ;)

it would also help if you could post any recordings you already have of you rapping (is this for your voice??)

certain mics characteristically work better for certain types of voices (hence me suggesting a listening test)

can i ask why you've narrowed it down to these two??? there's a few other mics i'd suggest for this price point

Try the AT2020 first its only $99. It will impress you so much you will come back with a post in 3 months after making your hit that says "why waste your money on expensive mics the AT2020 is the bomb". I got the 2020 and had a smile on my face ear to ear when i heard my first recording thru it.
Later you can get the 4050. Most people that i read about on this forum that have the 4040 want to sell it and get the 4050.
and the Solaris...... i would try it before i buy it(i dont think its rated as a GOOD vocal mic). I think it looks cool thou.
