M-Audio Nova Sound problem

Hi Newbie here,
Around 10 years ago I bought an M-Audio Nova mic and used it for only a few hours. My domestic situation changed and so boxed the mic away for future use. I recently returned to the idea of making some amateur home recordings after purchasing a Tascam DP24. I connected up the Nova via the phantom power on the Tascam and initially the sound from the mic was vibrant and very sensitive. After around 5 minutes the sound from the mic diminished and the background white noise increased dramatically. I repeated the test on an independent power supply with an ART microphone preamp into headphones and the effect was the same, I have since repeated the test a few more time with the same results. The Nova has been well looked after keeping it within its zip up bag and original box with extra foam to protect it and without ever dropping it. You can imagine my horror that after all this time it seems to have developed a fault. I approached the UK distributor who wanted £30 just to look at it before giving an estimate for the work. Because the mic sounds so good if only for a short period of time I'm inclined to think that it could be a component issue rather than the capsule. If I had an idea of what was wrong I would try and repair it myself.
Any ideas, guys?
