Hi guys,

newbie here. first post. i did a search and found some great info on good "best bang for your buck" mic preamps for home recording.

I want a dual pre and it sounds like everyone like the MAudio DMP3, and the ST VTB-1 (which i would need 2), and the FMR Audio RNP8380. alot of people are saying that the RNP has great headroom... but the price tag is more than 2x that of the DMP3 (199 vs. 475).

any of you guys who have used the RNP, is it worth the extra money in your opinon?

thanks.

Welcome aj! There have been NUMEROUS threads written about
both pre's here and if you utilize the "SEARCH" function, you'll be able to glean many opinions about both units.
Accordingly, many feel the DMP offers "colorless" and clean functioning at an affordable price, while the RNP,priced twice the amount provides more than adequate operation yet constructed cheaply with some discernable "flavor" added to the proc'd signal.

My advice is if you have the opportunity to either audition or A/B
both units, let those "floppy pick-ups" located on the left and right side of your head be the judge!

Good Luck!

my advice to people looking for a first "quality mic preamp" is to get a grace 101. it's clean and VERY real with a nice wide image in the speakers. the fmr rnp is a quality piece of gear but i think the grace would give you a better reference point from which to make future preamp and mic purchases.

thanks for the advice. the grace definitely looks like a nice pre. however, it's only a singal channel pre. but reading around, most people give nothing but praises about it. hmm.. i'll have to look into that. i already have a Joemeek VC3Q, which is a nice "colored" sound... maybe i could just get the grace 101 and run it side by side w/ my MEEK...
