Picked up one of these from Marsmusic.com. Dual channel for $80. I haven't had a chance to really give them a good test. I did do a quick a/b with the mackie VLZ preamps using an NT-1 though. The DMP-2 has gain for days seems like, I barely cracked the gain open, to match the level on the Mackie, I had to about halfway.
The bulk of my test was the jingling keys test. The M-audio was much clearer, the mackie was hardly inteligable compared. note that I have a mackie with VLZ but not the newer VLZ Pro pre-amps.

For $80 this is defintly the best deal around for a two channel preamp. Especially if you have the need for something with +70 db of gain! I'm going to get another and rackmount them so's they'll look all sexy with my Delta 1010 :D Gotta love that silver! Can't wait till I can get my hands on a dbx 576! I guess I'll have to get behringer gates and comps too so I can have an all silver rack! and a Phonic mixing board.. lol :D

man,

m-audio is out of their freaking mind to sell that unit for that price. The review I read compared it to units costing many times more.

Is that a special at marsmusic? I have been wanting this unit for some time, and I hope I can yank me up one too.

Congratulations

Hey James, any chance that we can get a little MP3 clip...maybe a dab of vocal, maybe a dab of guitar going straight in....

I think Im getting it....Im using my J-Station or old 4-track for preamps right now...obviously for guitar the J-Station works but running a mic thru either doesnt.....

yeah the deals only at Mars. The unit list's for over $200!!! In three different Mars stores I've been in, none had them... best bet is to order online. I got mine in a few days, very timely shipping.

Yeah sure Gidge, I'll post a little MP3. I could do a little cheap pre-amp solution shootout. DMP-2, Mackie VLZ, ART MP... or maybe not so involved.... We'll see what you get. lol. This thing is clean clean clean. Makes the Mackies seem edgy. Looks like my drummers getting back off the road this week, so I'll have plenty of chance to use it...

wow.

2 channels that sound better than the mackies for $80. Is that killer or what?. I hope nobody ever looks at the art ever in the light of this. I need to get me one soon.

So how does it compare to the pres on the Ghost mixer?

peace

thanks for the links dolemite

i'm beginning to like mars a lot. THey sold me my delta 1010 with vegas for $700 when sweetwater was still selling it for no less than $950.

i'll go with the latter option c7

the manufacturers retail prices are set in order to make products seem good and desirable but dont necessarily reflect the production cost.

its like consumer electrical stuff... sony dont want supermarkets selling their stuff cos it undermines their pricing strategy and makes their stuff look cheap
its all down to marketing.

the other possibility is that its just a loss leader or they are selling them at marginally above trade to draw in custom.. make people think they are paragons of competitive pricing when on the whole they arent. who knows!

Everywhere else the DMP-2 is like $180. Except at Mars. They must have gotten a deal on a bulk of them or something. Yeah Retail is a joke. I like companies that list the street price instead of the retail price. I've seen just a few ads like that. Some magizines reviws give the street price, some give the retail price, where is the consistancy?

I should get time tomorrow to get a little "testing" done... I set up to do it last night, but got side tracked on actually playing! can you believe it! I mean why the hell would I want to play when I got all this gear to test! :D :D

Hi james HE,

Do you mind testing at 24/96, as this will make the differences even clearer.

I listened to the wav files on the post, and it was a very tough call. After normalising in soundforge, they sounded almost the same, with the dmp-2 having a little edge. A little more polish.

They may be blowing them out because there was talk of updating it.

There was a discussion on rec.audio.pro over the phantom power specifications.

Someone said the newer DMP2s will have a "pad" switch.

I wonder if the Omni i/O is the replacement.

I may pick a couple of the older ones up for the dynamic mics I have.

They were going to update it because the input gain stage has a fixed 40 db of gain with no adjustment. This is partly what makes this thing so quiet, but with especially hot condensors you might end up clipping even with the gain dialed all the way down. The easy solution to this is to use your mics 10 db pad if it has one or get yourself one of those little XLR thingies that connects between the mic and the preamp that does about the same thing. BTW, the phantom power specs, while they are a little under the spec'ed 48 volts with certain mics, the DMP2 actually performs better in this respect than most preamps under $500, and few mics really require the full 48 V.

those bastards at marsmusic ran out of the dmp2 while I was still trying to justify the purchase

Or maybe it is all you bastards that could not keep your hands off those puppies :)

I WANT MY DMP2

thanks,

I have sent them an email about it, but I don't know what good that did this late at night.

IS there any way I can make sure I am the one to get it?
Do they have an express number or something or should I just go ahead and order it and then call them?

peace

Call 818-993-0772 and talk to Sharon...I just got off the phone with her 30 minutes ago....

hey thanks gidge,
thanks.

THe lady at audiomidi.com was very helpful.

She emailed me back and said that she kept the unit for me.

Of course, I gave her the info on the spot, I can't bear to lose that kind of deal. So if everything goes well, I should have my unit before this time next week.

I am excited about getting such a higly praised AND clean unit to sit right next to my highly praise BUT colored joemeek.

peace
