Luthiers, what do you think of this?

Was the neck 3D printed too? It looks like wood to me.

A guitar is only under roughly 200 pounds of string tension? I thought it would be more than that.

It probably sounds like baloney. :D

I don't think a 3D guitar could beat a well done hand made guitar.

I don't know where they got their information from but that's not the world's first 3D printed guitar. There's another dude who made a couple electrics at least a year ago. I'll search out the link and post it when I find it.

As for whether or not plastic beats out wood, I would say that it certainly does with acoustics but electrics is a whole other story. And by the way, what do you think of Ovations? They're mostly plastic, if you didn't already know.

they said that in the article.

I really don't know where to start with this post. Best I just .

Please do! I'm interested in hearing what you have to say.

The new me stops me from pointing out when people post wrong or ill considered stuff here. It stems from no longer caring whether the info here is good or not and just ignoring people who parade opinions without the background or knowledge to back it up. It's been a long journey.;)

Well, I never really asserted any of this. I actually have huge doubts to this. I just want to know what you say, as your knowledge is incredibly more extensive than mine.

No worries mate. It was the dumb post that got the facepalm not the topic.;)

As to my opinion on the guitar in question that would be limited because I haven't heard it, but I have reservations sonically and commercially that are soundly based on many years in the trade. Alternative materials for acoustic enclosures are not new and none yet have held a candle to a solid wood construction. There is a point at which it ceases to be a guitar and to sound like one. The guitar playing public are a very conservative lot.

That said there will be loads of research and dev done on alternatives as timber becomes scarcer and more expensive. The resulting instruments will improve and our ears may adjust at the same time. Unfortunately mine are tuned into wood and nothing else will do.

It is an interesting piece of engineering in itself and I would be interested to look it over if I had the chance. However the only thing that is new is the construction method.

Whats this supposed to mean? I mentioned that acoustic Ovations are mostly plastic. This isn't me "parading an opinion". Have you played one or even held one in your hands? The entire backside is made of plastic. I know this because I owned one.

From Ovation's website:
Our bowl bodies are made from Lyrachord, a durable yet lightweight composite material designed to efficiently transmit vibration. A Lyrachord body has a smooth interior surface that reflects sound better than porous wood. A molded Lyrachord bowl doesn't require internal braces that can block soundwaves traveling inside the guitar. And unlike wood, Lyrachord is virtually indestructible-our bowls won't warp, chip, crack, or split. Thanks to Lyrachord, the Ovation roundback is the world's most scientifically advanced acoustic guitar.

And as for the statement I made about wood (which was clearly stated as an opinion) as the building material, I can be pretty certain as well because I MAKE solidbody guitars and I've tried several different materials, including cardbord, a giant piece of ABS plastic and various woods. I can post pics and make sound clips, if you still think I'm just "parading my opinions [about] without the background or knowledge to back it up".

I do think you are parading your opinions about and I do think your original post was ill considered. Go ahead post some stuff..

seriously?
You actually think this is something that every guitar player on the Earth doesn't already know but now we do because you owned one?

wow ..... learn something new everyday ..... Ovation's backs are made of plastic ........ never knew that, oh wait .... EVERYONE knows that.
:D
And in general Ovations are reviled for their crappy sound.
I actually don't hate them personally but the vast majority of players (ALL of whom know they have plastic backs) seem to absolutely hate them.

And, this is nitpicking to be honest but, I wouldn't call them 'mostly' plastic since the tops are wood and the necks on the decent ones are wood.
So, at most, they might be 40% plastic.
