I decided it was time to move up in the world of recording from a little M-Audio MobilePre to a Grace Lunatec V3 (like trading in roller-skates for an Audi). I'm recording onto my laptop via the digital in of an Edirol UA-5 (and listening to the digital out via a Benchmark DAC1 which feeds a HeadRoom Cosmic headphone amplifier).

Currently I only have one mic, an AT 3035. While I don't have any complaints with the AT 3035, it seems sort of a shame plugging a $200 mic into a $1370 pre-amp.

My primary focus is spoken word in the field (e.g. story-telling in a mountain meadow). However, I would like to play around with doing some nice stereo recordings -- so, a matched pair might be nice.

Thank you for all your thoughts.

Not that I have anything useful to contribute, but I plug my $80 mics into my "$1000" mic preamps all the time (read: SM57 and SM58). They sound like different creatures..

As for the spoken word.. I've read somewhere along the lines of a SM7, RE20, and maybe even a SM57?

I'm sure others will chime in..
