I knew there'd be a range of opinions from left to right on this one!
So thanks to everyone for dealing with the big file. The original 24 bit Wav is 110 MB's! Ouch.

jcmm- Glad you liked the flow of the tune. That's one of my favorite things about this one is the dynamics. I appreciate the feedback.

Track Rat- Ya his solo is real nice. I got the sections first, and I asked him to add a crazy solo at the end. It's a great ride, I actually had to cut out part of it because there was just tooo much going on, plus there were already 6 horns accenting the guitars. But I was able to use some of it. Thanks man.

Sam- We already spoke about this, but thank you as always!

badgas- I often wish I was born about 15-20 years ealier, because of the great experimentation that was happening back then. It would have been musical heaven. Thanks brotha!

Chris- Thanks again man. Ya I like the way these vox sit better too, but there's a few goofs here and there that I wish I had noticed before I broke down the gear for the night. There's a lot of different ways to go with mixing these horns. I chose to raise them in some spots and lower them in others to try to sort of paint the surface of the mix. Thanks for the listen bro.

Charva- "Psycho Dave Mathews"....I like that :)

Guernica- You know what? I'm going to try that....gut the mids and raise them. Like you said, just for kicks. I can actually picture what that might sound like, and it's good in my head. :D
I responded to your PM.

SLuiCe- You're an idiot who couldn't mix his way through a salad.

SixStringBlues- Ah, building a deck...my specialty! I wrote most of this song while building decks :D Thanks for the listen.

Gidge- Thanks for another listen. I agree they are fantastic parts. I think I'm going to do a no synth mix- just guitars drums bass, horns and vocal. That might be very cool. Let those horns have some room to breathe. Thanks dude.

Participant- It was one of the requirements I gave him before doing the horns. He had to send me a video of himself breakdancing. He's quite good. And he can moonwalk like a motherfucker!
"5:30 "HO-ping you'll provide" (the vox clips...)" - I know...for some reason I liked it. But I'll probably change it when I smarten up.

Mixmkr- You have great ears. I agree about the kick. I just haven't got to it. Everytime I go to fix it I get distracted by another blunder :D I cut some highs in the cymbals because I get a lot of complaints about them. Obviously I have issues with drums :D Thanks my man!

Crawdad- thanks for the very detailed response. I need that stuff! The fact is, I have way to much instrumentation to try to add horns to this. It was an experiment fo sho. But like I said, I'm going to try a mix of this subtracting the synth lines and just letting the horns do the work. They'll have much more space. I'll just link it from this thread when I've done it. These horns definitely deserve their own space. Thanks for the help Al.

Toki987- Country cable- that's a riot! :D It's funny you said color outside the lines. I was playing this for my Dad last night, and I told him that's what I like to do. :D Thanks Toki.

David- You have heard it all. It's just good to twist it all up and re-paint it! Thanks man.

Alright take care guys...and thanks for the thoughtful and insightful feedback!

nice.... nice!

I think it depends on the intended mood of the song, if the horns should be turned up. If anything maybe up a db or 2, but right now it gives it more of a Sade feel ... distant/relaxing/pink panther love.
acoustic sounds great :) esp. the off tempo stumming ...I route my mics into the board and use the great sounding reverb in there... maybe a tab of reverb would sound cool.

Very groovey!... 5 pink panther tails \

man.. your vocals can sound soo good and scarey... I almost have to run under my bed.

What's up with all this avatar changing???? I feel like I don't know anyone around here anymore... :p

What happened to the frog???? I liked the frog.. it was so... "you"... :p (surely that guy in your new avatar isn't you??? )

you and chris and lt. bob and the rest of the planet are all gettin' face lifts and I'm feelin' so.... left out... :(

man,.. I gotta get a new avatar...

any suggestions? (yeah.. I know.. I'm really askin' for it.. :p )

P.S. re: this song... I pretty much agree with sam's comments.

Cool tune,vocals were great,as always!
The sax sounded just right, good mix.

On the Lame,do you have it set to stereo or joint stereo.
I read where sometimes the joint will give you flanging problems.
Just a thought.

Another great tune!

Thanks for sharing it,
Pete

Jeff- Thanks for stoppin by. I've got a cd burned of the new music in my truck. I'll keep you posted. :D

WATYF- It's almost November and the frog was getting cold. That's me and my cat at our halloween party Saturday night. She was pretty drunk.

Pete- Ya, it is joint stereo...that's bad huh?

I got listening to this in my truck last night, and I'm discovering I need to make some changes to my room. I think there's too much bouncing going on around the walls.
Thanks guys.

Oh and should I weep about the one star sniper hitting me? ;)

WOW! Lt. Bob's horns really bring this one to a new level!

The mix sounds excellent! I love the way your vocals are sitting...there are still a few places (right around 3:30 is one I can think of) where the vox sounds a bit low, but overall it is right on.

I really love how this tune has turned out!

Excellent stuff!

:)

Wow..........I didn't even know it was posted. :o
There's certainly room to prefer it one way or the other....with or without the horns I mean. The horns change it into a different song almost and it was very hard to find places to put horns because the song was so complete. In fact I almost bailed on it but I actually liked what I ended up with. However I can see where someone might like it better without them.

Now as for the mix....first to Crawdad.....7 horn parts is a little misleading. Actually there are two groups of three horns and most of the song there are only three horns. The only places the second group comes in is as an echo of the first group so really there are mostly three parts going.

The solo definitely should come up if it's going to be there...at least as loud as you would put a rocking lead guitar. And really, I think all the horns should come up just a bit, once again, if they are going to be there, they need to be heard. Otherwise it's just background noise muddying up the mix. The tone on them sounds good to me. I'd be interested in hearing the mix you're talking about doing but I don't know if you need to pull the synths, maybe you could just do the opposite and put the horns to the forefront and the synths in the back. In my test mix I just mixed them the same volume as the synths and to my ears that worked very well. But this song lends itself to so many possibilities that anyone that touches it could come up with a different perspective on it.

I'd like to thank SLuiCe for letting me experiment on this. I'm sure he was shocked at what I had done to his song but I had a lot of fun with it once I got over my fear and everything. ;) It was a real challenge and I enjoyed the hell out of it, Thanks man. :)

You did a helluva job man! Listening to this in my truck, I noticed it's not the same mix I thought I was hearing in my new "studio" room. I'm going to need to deaden the walls, because a lot more of the mid-upper registers are sounding than are really there. So I do see where some people are coming from. I now know I could get a better mix out of this. Regardless of anyone's preference for horns or not, your parts are fantastic Steve. Thanks again!

I'll link you to any remix I do. Oh and PM me about "Look Away" :)

I'm by no means an expert on the subject,I just read that joint stereo has a tendency to cause flanging on full mixes.
It's worth a shot to try it in stereo and see if it helps.

Are you using a windows front end for Lame where you have an options menu?

Pete

Hey Pete, I was runnning a dual boot of XP Pro and 2000 Pro, until recently. I never changed the default LAME settings (which included joint stereo) after reinstalling XP. But to be honest, after a few listens on other systems I'm finding this mix to be substandard anyway. It's dryer than it sounds in my room, and a lot bassier, like mixmkr was saying. It did sound better prior to the MP3 compression though. But they all do. This one just seemed to lose more than usual.
Thanks for the info on Joint Stereo, I have no idea what that means. I thought I just have to choose that, smoke a joint, and everything will be in stereo  What do I know?

gave it a listen. very modern sounding, in terms of songwriting. the horns do sound a bit quiet for my taste as well.. I love the arrangement though. And the vocal performance was very solid. Ominous sounding.

I hope the party went well...

first, I just have to say again that this is a hairy freakin' piece of music.. I even settled into the horns.. I have never heard anything like this.. I hate to sound like a butt munch, but I would almost say groundbreaking.. I had to give it 5 stars..

Now about LAME, I only had problems with it when I tried to change the setting higher.. I leave it at the default setting and I dont have any problems for the most part.. I hope I havent been using some horrible joint stereo thing.. I only use the tractor by itself..

One more thing.. Your a scary lookin' dude Tom!

and the cat looks stoned!
