Low Cost Vocal Mic for Studio

I'm on a budget (who isn't?) and am looking for a good vocal mic for under $200. Can anyone make any recommendations?

Dark Friend, you may also want to check ebay for the Shure Beta 58-they typically have them new, they sound like an enhanced SM58 (at least to me), and run under $200.
 
Not enough info here for a really meaningful reply.

If you have a real preamp with phantom power, I'd say test and select a _good_ Oktava MK-219 from Guitar Center (Russian, $99.99) or a Marshall MXL-1006 (Chinese, $79.99) from SamAsh.Com - sale prices for June, anyway.

Once you have a large-diaphragm condenser mic of some sort, get a demo or warez version of the Antares Microphone Modeler and see what you can do with it. This software now has profiles for the MK-219, so can be used as designed with that microphone and can be fiddled around with using any microphone to good effect.

Ive been shopping along the same vain and these are several of the lower priced mics that Ive considered, I allready own the nady and the superlux(which Impressed me by beating out a rode nt2 ,I tried next to it on Identical pres in a makie mixer.)

Maybe the list can help you with your shopping.

By the way wanna buy a nady? Im selling one I dont expect to sell it arround here though.:cool:
 
Darkfriend, do you already have a mixer or pre-amp with phantom power
in order to use the condenser mikes mentioned so far?
 
Thanks for the comments everyone.. I'm very interested in the Marshall mentioned in earlier posts, as I've heard some good things about it. I use an m-audio Audiobuddy preamp, so a condenser mic should work fine. I have been using an SM58 and gettting great results, but I know a good mic would allow for an even better vocal sound.

Anyone care to tell me where you're getting this price? I searched the 'net for the stores mentioned on the PMIAUDIO website, and the lowest price I saw was $230.00.
 
Fuck "low cost". When a person has talent, cost isn't a factor. If a person has an ounce of talent, mics will be shoved in their face and no one will give two shits whether they came from Neumann or Radio Shack.
 
Amen, Hixmix. Ella Fitzgerald couldve been recorded through a radio shack mic and she wouldve had the same career. Let alone an sm57. That being said though, 99% of the talent out there is not on the same planet/solar system/universe as Ella and so thats where a good engineer/producer/and gear come in. :D
 
That's why 99 percent of of everyone posting their opinions here should just shut up, go to sleep, and go back to their day jobs on monday.

Since Ella F. was unavailable for my session, I have to stick with plain-old Doug who does a pretty decent job singing.

If all studios had perfect singers as clients, I guess they wouldn't need to buy any other mics than SM57s. I on the other hand, am looking for slightly better quality than an SM57 will allow..

Those of us with only 3/4 of an ounce of talent (or less) will continue to try to make up for those deficiencies by throwing money into gear.

Anyone with any ideas where I can throw $199 and have them throw me a C1?
 
C7sus- you've got a point. I thought they just started shipping a couple of weeks ago. That's hardly enough time to do a proper evaluation.

I think the Shure SM58 makes a lot of sense. Then someday when you have the cash to buy a REAL condenser mic, buy a good one. Not some $99 mediocre one.

I'm just a poor f%^&k with a cheap ass home setup, who has been singing into a used SM57 for years. If I scrape the bottom of the barrel enough, I MIGHT be able to afford a C1. I'll NEVER be able to save up and wait for a "REAL" mic. I've read enough posts at enough places to convince me that a C1 would be a great improvement to my setup.

...Still waiting for someone to tell me where I can find a C1 for $199... (I care not how many posts you've made, or if you like Ella Fitzgerald)...
