Low ceiling????

It's a buyers market, as I understand it-- I'm sure you'll find the right spot!

The idea of recording drums in a room with a 6' ceiling would make me cringe. It might be okay, try clapping your hands in there and see what it sounds like.

As a general rule I don't like recording drums in rooms with less then 10ft ceilings. I probably like a roomier sound then most but to me bigger is better.

RAMI, is that the room you've done the last couple of tracks in?
The drums sound terrific in the space if it is!
At 5' 3 1/2" I would consider 7' as land of the giants.
With your work ethic you'd best find a room you're comfy with as a work space as well as a sound source unless you're going to switch to claustrophobic emo!

I agree. Realistically, I can't see myself in anything lower than a 8' celiling. 10' would be great.

Hehe....Yeah, I spend all my time there, so I do want to be comfortable.

No, this isn't where I've done my latest recordings. It's a new place that I was considering at the time I started this thread....but have since decided that the question is moot.

In answer to your question ... I could see it working out if you were to line your ceiling with 703 insulation panels. But then you'll effectively be taking away another 4 inches or so. No doubt you could get it to work sound-wise. As others have aluded to, it just may pose some other logistical challenges.

How fucked am I with a 6 foot ceiling??? I know it depends on treatment, placement, etc....But, are you pretty much screwed for recording drums with such a low ceiling??? Or are there very effective ways to counter-act that???

I use 4 mics on my drums and don't want to start close micing my toms, etc....

This will help me decide on houses I'm looking at.

Thanx.
I've got a just over 6' ceiling. For sound i will just put absorption panels up there, and the ceiling will acoustically disappear. Only problem then is height issues, but im only 5'6" so that's not a problem for me. Drummers sit anyway, so as long as you remember to duck every time you go in that room you'll be fine.

as others have said, with a ceiling this low, you essentially need to make it disappear. Cover it with 703 (or better, 705) and you should be able to make it work.

it won't be ideal, the drums won't have space to "bloom" and you WILL feel trapped in.....but it's something you should be able to work with if you throw enough rigid fiberglass at.

cheers,
wade

well, you certainly wouldn't want to do any trampoline exercises, that's for sure.

you could remove the ceiling plasterboard in the drum area and fill the joists with insulation ,depending on the depth of the joists you could put insulation and the a nogin (piece of 1*1 ") insulation nogin etc

and then finish it off with some material to keep the insulation fibres in the joists

or you could consider using the se small reflection filters to stop the reflections coming back to the mics

or both of these

I'm not the best engineer in the world, or even the worst (I still have a way to go to make the worst) but I don't think you'll get much recording accomplished if you have everything mooted.

Ummmm.... I'm guessing you DON'T want my suggestions about the ceiling then? It DOES involve a chain saw and a LOT of dust...

:)

I sure wouldn't want to be in that situation. How will you ever throw a spinning drum stick in the air and catch it:eek:

I'd avoid it if at all possible.

F.S.

You'd never be able to squeeze in the pyrotechnics?

Unless you're this guy....
