Heard the 2nd mix. Great fun! No nits. Just likeable groovin' Still thought I heard a few lipsmacks though...Have to re-listen to get the times.

Okay, :28 and :37/39 somewhere for examples, but they're not smacks, they sound like gleeks...noises the moisture in your mouth make when moving about or when they shoot out and hit something nearby, dunno. Possibly just your jaw making noise as it moves.

Listening to mix #2 now. I must have been listening when you posted mix #2 last night.
I think the bass is fine, although I'd still add a little more oomph to it. But since it doesn't have to compete with a kick drum, it works here. I love a solid low end on a bass, but I admit that it doesn't work in all situations. I wish I was getting that much high end definition in my bass tones. I think that it sounds natural.

I listened to mix one yesterday, and mix two today, and the bass sound seemed to work much better in mix two. I thought it was pretty light-on in mix one, both in terms of volume and extension into the lower frequencies.
I didn't think either of the guitar sounds cancelled or masked each other, i could clearly hear their individual tones and neither seemed to be getting swamped out by the other at any point from my perspective.
The chord progression didn't bother me, i like dissonant and discordant music as well as crazy song structures as much as more traditional harmonies and structures, but this didn't seem cliched, or boring and predictable to me, even if not overtly adventurous. What works, works when it does sometimes as far as i see it. I tried replacing the word buddha for lover in my mind while i listened and it didn't really make sense to me, i would like to hear the 'saints' version too.

He's awesome. I actually never heard this version. The original is extremely sparse and has no bass in it at all, literally. The record company thought he lost his marbles and told him it needs bass and he said "No, this is how it's going to be released". By this time, he had some clout, so he got his way and it turned into one of his biggest hits.

What a cool, quirky tune. I am always impressed with the creativity, expression and execution I am hearing around here.
No nits, really. Everything sounds great. All song elements are coming across really present and strong. Arrangement is great. Delivery is great.
Perhaps you have already made a bunch of changes, but I am at a loss to suggest anything to make it "better". It sounds great as it is. I say leave it!

I think it's up there with your best, Paul. I too thought the space was constrained but that isn't taking anything away from it at all...it's a preference how you space things. It's a tight and even mix.

Thanks, Stu. I've tried three pannings. The first had each guitar part panned both left and right and the net result was that it sounded like everything was center panned. The second one hard panned the two guitars opposite each other. I thought that one was a bit extreme. The third one brought the two guitars into the center a bit, but they're still more distinct than when they were overlapped. I think that if I want to overlap parts like that, I should double-track them. Double-miking doesn't work anywhere near as well.

I thing the bongos sound stellar. Man, I'm working a song that I need bongos on and I hope I can get them sounding this good. Very creative tune and really good recording. Like has been said good performances too. No nits for me. It's a better recording result than I'm getting.
