I think the important thing to keep in mind, has more to do with music sounding good. It does not matter how loud shit is, but then again, if it comes across as weak-there are other issues that have nothing to do with the 'loudness' of the recording.
I just finished "mastering" our CD... I could have pushed it louder but thought it started sounding like shit when I did. I ripped a track from a CD of an artist with similar instrumentation and played it through Reaper and was horrified with how it sounded via my monitors.. totally clip city... harsh, distorted..
I'm sure a real mastering engineer could have got our work louder again with better tools, but really, I don't give a rat's - people can turn it up if they want to... and when we're discovered and become the next Justin Bieber





Some types of music is easier to slam without the listener noticing than others... ours probably not so much. Who cares...
