im looking for a freeware recording program that i can record a rhythm to and play it back as im recording the solo ontop of it. Ive tried audacity which is pretty good but i cant seem to hear the rhythm when i record again. THanks everyone

Audacity should work. You just need to arm a separate track for the solo (meaning, the software doesn't mix them together -- you'll have to mix them after recording).

Other freebies:
Kristal Audio Engine
Reaper
