Hello, I already own mics that i like, but am wanting to switch to a different and better interface or soundcard, and possibly new software. I was using the m-audio pre usb and was not happy with the sound quality. Im also using adobe audition and am pretty neutral on this b/c of lack of experience in using other software. any suggestions? my range is around 500-1000 dollars.
a friend of mine is pushing protools w/ mbox or digi rack....not sure....

protools is the standard, but from what i can gather, not worth the price. i use cubase sx with two different interfaces in your price range... an edirol fa-101 and a presonus firepod. both devices work very well, however i would push the firepod. the fa-101 is convenient for size and offers an option to record at a higher sampling rate, but only offers two preamps where the firepod offers eight. it's also obnoxious to change the sampling rate on the fa-101 (you basically have to power cycle the unit and restart the software).

the firepod also includes a lower version of cubase as an added bonus so if you're looking to try out different software as well, i would definitely recomend looking into it. both units are in the 500-600 dollar range, i believe.
