Can anyone recommend a 2 channel compression unit $300 or under that will sound great for overheads with my GT Bricks? I've been looking considering the RNC 1773. Any other ideas?

under $300, that would be it for me..... couple more bucks.... DBX 160A

Unless there is a workaround, I am pretty sure there was a problem with the RNC playing nice with the Brick. It was only a problem at certain gain levels on the Brick, but it was a problem. I think there is a thread in Harvey's forum at the PSW site. Check with FMR before you get an RNC.

I was hoping to have a compressor running with the brick into my mixer. Any other suggestions for compressors that will "play nice" with the Bricks? Also, where is the website where I can read about problems with the RNS and the Bricks? Thanks.

The thread stopped in April of 2007, so you may need to do a little browsing to see if you can find anything newer than this. Here is the start of the thread that I was talking about:

It goes on for 5 pages and the bottom line seems to be these 2 statements:

"According to Mark, the problem occurs only when the Brick's gain is set to around 2 to 3 o'clock, where the output wave becomes asymmetrical. Other settings on the Brick do not cause the problem."

"I just got an email from Mark McQ explaining the problem. To summarize, the slight non-linearity in the RNC's VCA exactly mirrors the non-linearity in the Brick at a certain setting, and the distortion added by the Brick is cancelled out. This is pure unlucky coincidence (if you regard removal of distortion as a problem). Anyway, Mark's explanation has removed my doubts and the RNC is back on my shopping list.

BTW any other compressor that uses a properly trimmed Blackmer VCA is likely to cause the same problem (dbx anyone?)."

I am going to get an RNC fairly soon, even though I do plan to get a Brick at some point iin the future. I recommend you call Mark at FMR and see if he has an update. You will not find anyone easier to get hold of and he and Beth are really committed to customer support and satisfaction. Great people and product designers too. They answer their e-mails, but for a faster response, it works better to give them a call.
