Another brick in the wall
of mic preamp for my drums! Just doing some more research, and I came across the PreSonus M80 8 Channel Mic/Line Preamp. It looks pretty good to me, and it's full of Class A pres. What do yall think of this one?

Oops, lets see, I'll be recording with my Layla 20s to Nuendo. Budget... around a thousand, although it would definatly be something I'd save for, and I want to get the best I can the first time, so I could say, 2,500 tops probably.

Sytek MPX-4aii... under $800 each.... Very nice 4-channel Pre. Excellent slew specs (fast) for drums.

Get two. You'll be set.

Checked out some reviews online, I think this is one smokin preamp especially for the price. How about the Burr Brown channels? Would they work better from drums, and be worth how ever much more it costs? If so, how much more would it cost to have those put in?

I think most all of them already come with 2-channels of burr-browns. Opinions are generally mixed as to which are better for drums.

Whether you want all four channels stock or with the Burr-Brown options... price is the same.

You CAN use the Burr-Brown on drums... but they really shine on vocals. My personal experience.

I won't deny the Sytek is a good quality preamp for the money, but I'm not sure it's the best, given your budget, for recording drums. The main reason is that i found it didn't have the gobs of headroom (and wasn't very friendly when pushed too hard) that are extremely useful when recording drums.

Especially given Murphy's corollary # 4-b: No matter how you set your preamp levels during sound check, the drummer will always find a way to clip your preamps at least a few times during the session.

Since you have a $2500 budget, I would check into the ATI 8MX2. The preamps are excellent (they're based on the Paragon live mixer preamps) and you get the really wonderful extra feature that it can function as an 8x2 mixer as well. That means you can take the eight inputs (like say, a pass of 8 backup vocalists) and submix them down to a stereo output, including setting up panning on each mic. That way you can record your backup vocal pass onto just two tape tracks. Very useful if you are going to do four passes - so you end up with 8 tape tracks instead of 32.

Or, as another possibilty, you could just submix three toms down to a pair of tape tracks using the stereo submixer, while sending the other mics direct to tape keeping them each on their own track.

Because it is only one rack space, it makes for an excellent portable set of preamps for remote recordings too. I've used this preamp for mic'ing drum kits quite often, and I've gotten great results. I don't use it as much as i used to, only because now I have some API and Neve channels that often get the call instead.

LD,

Not sure how long ago you purchased yours, but I spoke recently with Mike (Sytek owner), and he was mentioning that a lot of their previous units had headroom issues, which have since been remedied. Apparently, their inputs are starting out at a lower db figure than before.

Not sure of the specifics, but it might be worth it to call and ask him about it.

I'd be reaching for 2 DaviSound TB-6 4-channel pres for $950 each! With headroom for days (+32 dBV) and possibly as fast and dynamic it may get... Designed ON drums; one of the major design tests.
