Looking for another $100 General Purpose Dynamic Mic

Get some really old Electrovoice dynamics off of ebay.

Namely, something like an RE-15 or an RE-16 / 18.

Or look for some old Peavey PVM 520's. And no, I'm not joking. One of the best and most useful mics I can think of. Tons of upper midrange boost makes it ideal for getting more click out of a kick drum, more crack from a snare, or more crunch out of a guitar amp ... if these are things you need. Also an unusal, and very clever / colored option for vocals in certain situations.

.

Ill second the Peavey.... I have the 520i.....

i hardly ever use my sm57 on guitar cabs anymore since i have my 609. it sounds brighter and more open with more isolation. it just seems to cut through the mix better.

and it is a great snare mike yes.

sucks on vocals.

I agree that it is much brighter which is what I really dont like about it. Im sure I could play with placement a little more and get a better sound out of it but its just too easy to throw up a 57 and get a good sound without a lot of hassle...I will typically use an LDC a few feet back to fill in any highs that I feel is necessary to fill out the sound...

the e609 looks like a pretty good deal. Looking at the frequency response chart and it has less peaks in the highs. Might want to invest in one of these then.

I guess the e609 or EV635 would be ok, but I would save for a MD421 or SM7B.
