ok, here's the story,

i got a great mixer, but i'm slowly getting interested in something new...

i got 24 XLR inputs, 24 d/o , 24 inserts, 4 aux (2 post 2 pre) and only ONE stereo master output

its good enough for what i'm doing, i'm experimenting alot with the auxiliaries so i can record in multitrack....

but i'd like to have a mixing desc that doesn't have any flaws,,,,,,this one occasionally makes noize, the real painfull 120db SQUIEEEK noize when you turn the parametric eq.....makes your ears bleed...

and some Busses would be nice too..

i'm not gonna sell this one real soon, i might even keep it,
but one day i'll need something real decent...

so i'm looking for something with at least 12 XLR inputs,
doesn't have to be more.... 4 busses would be great,
some auxiliaries, .....blabla....just the basic stuff,
but a real nice sounding mixer, with good pre amps, and a very low noize profile....

maybe even an 8 channel mixer is good enough,
one that i'll only use for EXPENSIVE recordings.....
in that case i keep my studiomaster....for drums or live recordings...... and i use that little 8 channel bitch for the REAL stuff.....

i know all the brands, i know who are good and who suck.... but i don't know the difference between the sound, preamps, ....all i'm concerned about is real great quality.... so no behringer junk please....

any suggestions ?.

friendly regards,

excellent exellent !

of course i'm following the other threads about quality mixers...

thanx for the info ! appreciate it,

but ehm, what's up with those soundcraft SPIRIT mixers ?

are those mixers on the bottom of their catalogue ? i mean, those are just the cheap versions ? and with cheap i mean ...... you know.. :(

cheers,

Well, I use a Spirit SX mixer. Works pretty well, the pres are not astonishing, but quite a big step above Behringer, Phonic and so on. But there are better alternatives out there if you're willing to spend. The Midas Venice range is excellent, but really expensive. The smaller A&H mixers are pretty good too.

great,
i spent some time checking out those mixing descs,

and yes, i read more reviews about the midas mixers, never hard real bad stuff

but i'm getting real interested in the Soundcraft M12

1 ) just one thing, it doesn't have Busses, which is too bad i think,
but the direct outs, are they POST fader and POST EQ and POST aux ???

if so: perfect for multitracking

2 ) or like the auxiliaries, i think it has 4 of them right ? so which ones are POST and which ones are PRE fader/eq ?

3 ) can anyone compare the quality of the Pres of that M12 with the pres from a STUDIOMASTER (sessionmix 16:2) ? ...would be great cause i donno

thanx,

1. It is probably pre fader, pre aux and post eq. Anyway, that's how it's usually done. One can easily modify many mixers in the spirit range to perform post fader though.

2. Don't know. But I think you're able to select that yourself. Again, on the SX it's one pre, one either or, and one post.

3. Nope. But I daresay it's a step up at any rate.

thanx,
well, yeah, i guess i don't really need postfader Direct outs,
but i think that Post AUXiliary direct outputs would be great, no ?
mhhh, as you can see i'm still kinda struggling to find the best suited way to record in multitrack...

right now i don't have any busses, so i use my auxiliaries as outputs,
but i'm gonna stop doin that real soon, i'm gonna change my recent 24 channel studiomaster with a 16 channel one WITH 4 busses....
i think this is gonna come in handy when i'm recording drums...

the upgrade to a soundcraft will come in a few months

just too bad i haven't heard a Soundcraft mixer in my life, i've seen them yeah, but never really touched them... stupid fucking Belgium,.... most people here seem to use nothing but junk....

anywayz...you guys have been real helpful ! thanx !

ear. :)

allen and heath

allen and heath 16 channel mix wizard, open sounding, overlapping eqs, busses, multi fx, and each cannel has direct ins and outs, 1000 bucks. ive tried the sound craft stuff and liked them, but this board smokes dude.
peace.

Direct Outs are almost always Post Fader and EQ. Inserts are almost always pre fader and EQ.

It would be impossible for them to be Post Aux because it would have to mix the Aux Returns back into the channel if you wanted to record with effects. That is what the inserts are for anyway.

There were a lot of older studio desks where aux 1 had a button that made each channels direct out feed from it rather than get its output from the fader path. Some of the old studiomaster's may have that.
