any opinions?

Ian

I;ve been looking @ getting one of those universal audio solo mic pre's. They make a tube one and a DI type. I was wanting the tube type. It sales for like 800.00 I beleive.

Ian, what preamps do you already have? Knowing what you already own will help with making a recommendation for a preamp that will compliment it.

Also, what does "warmth" mean to you Ian? Some of the best tube gear is very clean, and there are some solid state preamps with color. So are you looking for a darker color, a slower sound, or what?

right now im using mostly presonus pres, from a digimaxLT, some preamps from a firepod, and every once and a while the crappy pres on my motu (which arent THAT bad i guess) i have a GTbrick, and i have a FMR RNP/RNC combo onthe way. im looking for somthing with...not a mellower sound, but less sterile sound, and to possibly add some grit/depth to vocals and some roundness/boldness to guitars. and something to add a "fattness" to acoustic tracks. so im thinking, a darker bolder colour. thanks alot for all your thoughts

Well a relatively low cost option for what you want would be a joe meek 3Q. I actually own a presonus Eureka and have pretty much unplugged it in favor of the meek. It adds this kind of hugeness to distorted guitars that I've always wanted from a pre and it does surpriseingly well on male vox. Its all subjective at this point but if you have an extra 200 bucks to burn give the 3Q a shot, me likey.

Well, if you have a Brick and a RNP, I'm not sure where to go from there. Hmmmm......

check out a 1272 type pre...works nicely for the application you seem to be going for...lots of 1272 type things around!

Why not try Old School Audio stuff. They are said to be in the vein of API only cheaper. Start building a lunchbox. Initial investment is like 1300 but then every channel after that is only 500-600.

Sebatron is cool for tube stuff, as is the Avalon M5, though I'd personally go for a pair of 1272's or something along those lines if I could only have one great mic pre.

I guess it really depends what you will be recording. If it's vocals and acoustic stuff, I'd go tube probably. If it's drums, guitar, bass, I'd go solid state and do a 1272 or PM1000.

I have to say that the Presonus Eureka was extremely warm sounding, and only 499 new. two channels to boot.

are you going for "tube warmth"?

cause UA just dropped the solo 610, which is supposed to be somewhat close to the 2-610, which absolutely kick ass

Grace 101 for added warmth? That is certainly not how I would view it. Warmth to me almost automatically triggers the name Neve in my mind. The Chandler Germanium does look very cool for that as well, and also the Daking channel strips.
