Looking for a new amp. Thinking about a VHT Special 6

Not me, but go hear some in person, if you can. There's tons of good little amps for a little bit of money. The Egnater Tweaker with a 1x12 cab would rock your socks for not a lot of dough.

Nope, best smallest amp I've heard/used is a Orange Tiny Terror, literally blew my mind. It's on my to buy list. If you can find a used one, it'd probably be around your price range.

Jet City Pico Valve is another awesome amp, you could get a new one for $300. Great little amp.

And coming in third for me is the Blackstar HT 5 watt head. Played one at a local shop a while back great overall tone.

Can't really suggest anything as far as combos go, I don't own any nor play them to often.

And everyone needs a halfstack in their studio at some point ;)

I think I am going to increase my budget some and invest in an amp that will last me the rest of my life...

I am going to go play some amps today. I can get $150+ for my Blackstar HT-Dual pedal on ebay and I think I have about $100 in my paypal account - so I can scrape together like $600 or so.

Now you're getting somewhere. You can do pretty good for 600. Do you have a cab already?

The most important piece of equipment I've ever bought (well...close to my first tascam) was this isocab called the axetrak.
AxeTrak products for professional and home recording It seemed to be the best thing I could find based on reviews and the like.

It was great to get it and finally be able to find the "sweet spot" of the master volume on my amp.
I also don't hate my cheap randall solid state head anymore.

I've had it for 2 years now, and it's held up perfectly. I blew a fuse on it once when a friend cranked a distortion pedal through his already cranked b52 tube head. less than a painless minute later all was good again.
I liked it so much that a year later I bought the bass version.

There are some clips on that site.
I could post some clips too if you'd like.

I know a lot of people stay away from iso cabs and that's fine.
Just a suggestion though.

No cab - I just have a little practice amp.

I mentioned the Egnater Tweaker earlier. You could get that and a cab for under 600. I think it's a cool sounding little amp and it has all kinds of tonal possibilities.

When I'm finger-banging guitars at Guitar Center, if there's not a good Marshall to plug into, I go straight for the Egnaters. They're fun little amps - and very good for the money.

Cabs are something I would personally try to pick up used. Find a 1 or 2x12 for $150-200 then have $400 or so to spend on a head.

I bought my 1960 4x12 for $300 on craigslist, I'm sure you could find a 1 / 2 x12 for a lot less.

I just played a couple that were decent - went to a couple shops - one has a mesa boogie DC3 for $750 sounded pretty good - so did the Blackstar HT Club 40 for $599
