Definitely should have done more research on laptop DAW's before buying the DV8T... but couldn't have forseen all the BSOD errors, etc. Officially back in the market for a laptop.

Can anyone make any recommendations based on these preferences? Many thanks! :drunk:

- Interface is a Firepod (FP10), so an adequate firewire chipset is a must (are the Texas Instruments chipsets really the end-all, be-all?)

- Needs to run Cubase LE

- Have been using a Pentium 4 with XP Media Center, which has worked ok, but looking for the portability of a notebook, and the muscle to run more plug-in's. Not doing anything crazy, just some home recording and eventually live recording.

- Looking for a 16"+ moniter. (This will be my primary home PC too.)

- As far as processors, I had the i7 quad-core's in mind, but this is becoming secondary to the TI firewire chipset, etc. So, doesn't have to be rocket, just solid. But I'd like to be able to do some HD video editing too (might be in the wrong forum for that...)

- Trying to keep the bottom line in the neighborhood of $1500 if at all possible.

I'd prefer PC, but open to Macbook Pro if they are really, really the way to go given what I'm looking for. Also heard good things about Clevo and ADK. But if open to other suggestions too.

Thanks again!

I've researched this a lot and it seems that ADK, Lenovo's, and older Gateways seem to work pretty well. And of course Macbooks. I don't have any first hand experience with any of those, though. I do have experience with a Dell Inspiron 5100 and it didn't work so well with my Firepod (at the time). It did work with my old Mac Powerbook G4. I've since upgraded to the Firestudio...and now that I think about it I'm going to pull out the old Powerbook and give it a shot. ;)

You might want to check over at the Presonus forums, also.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely looking for something new, so I can take advantage of the latest components, so I guess that rules out a Gateway...

Switching to mac is kind of a last resort for me. I heard the mac pros had the same issue with the poor firewire bus, but that the express card provided an OK workaround.

ADK's seem to have it going on for sure, they look awesome, but can't seem to hit a setup that works for me at the right price point. The 7600 setup I was looking at was really really close, but has a sub-par gpu compared to the latest off the shelf notebooks. The 8600 has a rocket gpu (probably more than I really need), plus a bay for a second internal hard drive, but puts me a few hundred over my max price.

Which Lenovo's are you referring to? Which firewire chipset(s) do they use?

Thanks!
