I am desparately in need for an 8 channal mic pre with ADAT litepipe outputs, such as the presonus Digimax lt. I am really trying to expand my MOTU 828 MK II, so any 8 channal mic pre with ADAT litepipe compatabilities should be fine (of course the pres should be better than crap).

I have a presonus tubepre m-audio dmp3 and an old adat deck 8 track with a tape deck that eats tapes. Willing to trade or sell any of that.

Thanks,

Ben

I'm not offering mine, but have you checked out the M-Audio Octane?

Checked it out, and don't have enough money for it new, or just about any of the other options for me. I was really looking for deals here.

I'd recommend getting a SMPro Audio PR8 and modding it...go check out blacklionaudio.com or Prodigy Proffesional and look at the mod...

i read a little on that one myself. apparently the the pr8 can also be modded to become a "green pre", which is a mic pre that was conceived over at prodigy pro. that's what i got out of the stuff over there anyway. i might be way off on this.

i think the original mod to the pr8 involved removing some capacitors, which is suppose to make it much more usable than it is in it's stock form.

The plans to do the SM Pro 8 MK1 mod yourself isn't available on blacklionaudio.com yet, and even when it is the MK1 version doesn't have ADAT lightpipe output. The MK II version does have the ADAT out, but isn't even listed on the blacklionaudio.com site. I haven't really gone to Prodigy Professional yet, but thats my next stop. More advice needed...?

Ok well I can find plenty on the MKI, but nothing right now on the MKII, if anyone can point me in that direction that would be great. Otherwise, since I can't afford anything more expensive right now, would you, jkokura,TravisinFlorida, or anyone else suggest getting this pre and moding it later once I can find mod plans or understand how to do it (since I've never modded anything before and being a kid I really have no idea what they are talking about on Prodigy Professional, oh yes and I can't read schematics). Of course I can always ask who ever it is on blacklionaudio.com if he can mod the MKII also. Does anyone know if the schematics for the MKII and MKI are the same, or similar enough? Does anyone have any other help too?

Ben

They are definately different. I've talked to BlackLion and guys at Prodigy Pro and I'm thinking you're outta luck unless you learn to mod a pre without outside input. Both Blacklion and Prodigy Pro don't currently have mods/conversations of mods for the MK2. The mod for the MK2 might come up in the future though....that's always a possiblity.

I didn't realize you needed the Lightpipe. Sorry for suggesting the MK1 as clearly it won't do you any good. If you want lightpipe I think your only options below an Octane (HIGHLY recommended here) are the MK2 from SMPro and the Beri ADA8000. It's a toss up between them really.

Don't worry about the MK2's pres either by the way - the Mod's available for the MK1 because it is an inferior pre really...That's why people Mod! Basically, with a box like the PR8 you're getting the powersupply, the case, the outs and ins at a cheap price and then you're creating a better pre than the "6-8 dollar per channel" pre that you get...It's like taking a product that's worth 100 bucks, adding 50 in parts, and making a box that's worth 200 bucks... It's worth it if you can and want to learn, but if you want the Adat it's not going to help you.

Thanks Jacob!

I guess my real question, is should I jump at the SM pro pr 8 MKII or should I wait and jump at the Octane when I can afford it. I know that the general answer is that you should always wait for the better thing as it will bring a better outcome later, but my question is really how do these compair. I could POSSIBLY afford something like the Octane later.

Opinions?

Ben.

I've used the Octane and loved it. As for the MK2, I haven't used it, but if it's anything like the Mk1 than don't do it unless you're going to Mod it. Get the Octane...
