I recently recorded this for some friends...Im looking mainly for comments on quality...not talent...:)

Nice stuff. Quality is good, and some talent. Actually, the mis is good. I hear everything in it's place. Good tune.

awesome...thanks a lot...
we actually did this for the radio...a DJ for a locals band radio show heard the song from a live show and told them he would get on the air if they would get a decent recording of it...hope this will do the trick...

anyone else???

There is a lot wrong with the music mix here. Things hit too hard in the midrange and EVERYTHING is crowded.

do you mean i should drop the mids of the overall mix or in just some instruments?

I liked it, nice track!

You got a nice sound from the drums, especially the kick. I think they could do with being turned down just a touch, would sound alot better then.

Nice job though :)

I would shape the guitars to stay out of the way of the rest of the mix.

It's more than that though. This mix suffers from over maxing syndrome. It sounds like you tried to get the most out of each instrument with little regard to the mix overall.

Try using some reference material from your favorite similar commercial release. You will learn a lot.

k...i have made a few adjustments based on comments...it does sound better to me...what do you think?

the link in the first post still works so you can hear the original version and here is a link to the new mix...

after my last post...i burned it to a cd and listened...the highs are too high...and the kick still sounds like ass...any suggestions?

Guitars....

Its prolly just me - but the guitars are just waaay to distorted to begin with.

You would need to retrack to fix, tho....

I agree. Too much distortion to the point they sound fuzzy. I would have them retrack with the gain down. Have them listen to their guitars through headphones so they hear what the mics hear.

There is a bit too much midrange in the song. The highs are up there, but not enough to be ear splitting. Remember that when it comes to eq, cut before you boost...

I have had trouble getting them to cut their gain. They have backed off a little, but not much. I know that you should record with less than you would use live but they keep saying "I wanna make sure i capture MY tone". Im having the most trouble out of the lead guitarist. So...ill do what they want....its their song. Anyway, after listening to the last couple of mixes in my car, and making adjustments according to you guys' comments, I am uploading a new mix and it should be done by the time im done writing this. The link in my first post will still work and the link in this one will work, but not the second link that I posted.

here is the link to the first mix as well...

You could show them the difference. Let them crank the gain and record a few bars. Then have them back waaay off and record the same few bars. That might show them. Guitarists are like that. They just have to realize their tone isn't in the distortion, it's in their hands...

FWIW, you have made some improvements, but there is still a bit much in the mids that could come down.

Not A Critique!!!

Pretty cool song, and being as your mix kicks the shit out of anything I've managed, I'm only curious...

I've been experimenting with drum micing lately, with no success :o
For my own, or anyone elses benefit/personal knowledge, what's going on with the snare?

Is it just a less than great sounding snare compressed?
What's that distortion/clipping around 2:17 coming from?
There's something with the kick in general, can't put my finger on...

PS ~ no ass-kissing/coddling going on... I honestly do like the song. After 3 listens it's grown on me.

Second listen...

You still have a good tune here dude. I think Rokket is right about the mids. I don't here much of the kick, and it could be it is buried by lots of mid tones. Bring them down a little, and see if that gets the kick to be heard a bit more. Still a good song.

You can ass-kiss/coddle me all you want. Just remember, I don't have any money. :)

(Sorry, just HAD to throw that in.)

The snare is clipping at points which will spoil any mix. You dont want any digital clips really.
The mix sounds ok, but the second one sounds a tad muddy. Id spend more time on EQing the bass and guitars. Could be the mastering though. Try a small but moderately wide cut at 250Hz on your master to clean up muddiness, but watch as too much of a cut will make your master sound thin. Dangerous frequency to play with! and such a small change can make such a big difference.
Nice tune. The vox are nicely mixed.

Yes, it is their song, but you aren't paid to be as confused as them!

If you absolutely can't get them to take their sound down I would also take a direct dry signal off of the guitar so I could send it through an amp simulator after the guitarist passed out.

What they don't know doesn't hurt them. :D
