I own and use an ultragain pro in my studio.

I don't have a very trained ear, but I use it for all applications, since I simply can't afford anything else.

It's a little noisy, but it does what I need it to. I usually do a lot of digital quality enhancment to make up for the poor preamp.

Then you need to "train" your ears and audition other pre's in that price category.
