LOIgC 5.5 LATENCY PROBLEMS! ARRR!

I hAVE M-AUDIo 2496 audiophile card, and a behringer eurorack mixer. pc spec..intel pent 3, 256mb, 40g, and logic 5.5

i know everyone bangs on about latency but...
i am having to run it with the lowest latency value, (and also have selected the lowest buffer settin)but the dealy is still noticable and offputting and there are some nasty pops etc at times. it is fine when i unceck the software monitoring box on the audio driver 2 tab in audio preferences but then i cannot hear when playing back, or at least the sound is very very quite. do i just have to live wit it??? is my computer just not up to it?? please help ive only just started and cannot even get going yet because of it. the help would be much appreciated

I don't have experience with an audiophile card, but it may be where your solution lies. Unchecking the software monitoring box on the audio driver in LA is correct, but then you need to make sure that the 2496 is doing the monitoring instead. An acquaintance uses LA5.1 and a julia card, and this is the way he gets rid of the latency. (I use an aging LA 3.7 with an ISIS card, and latency was never a problem)
