Logic Pro 9 mixing vocals against a mp3 instrumental..help

It's Pro Tools I use, but that doesn't really matter much. Logic is every bit as good, if not better.

The plosives won't be anything to do with what way up the mic is.

It's just one of those things to be aware of. That in itself will probably sort it out. :)

aaah right..so it's the way am rapping/vocalling..whats some hints to stop plosives..Thanks so much steen..i won't post a long rap or anything, but i've got a instrumental with a song (she's already recorded) but lost the original beat as her hard drive crashed..just want to add a small 15 second rap into a gap verse with her so she's sent me the mp3 instrumental/kind of song..so i'm going to do a rap over that now..and then you can do a backing track v vocal mix and show me your skills..yeah? i heard pro tools is awesome and what the pros use..i'd love to get it..is it complicated as an interface? i really like logic i think it's simple to use once you know..but i found an i5 macbook pro just isn't powerful enough for logic pro 9..do you think protools is the same or..? because i've heard protools processes vocals better too

Honestly man, anything you hear about protools being better for x,y+z is pure myth.
I'm genuinely considering jumping ship to logic, or something else.

Plosives.
Put your hand in front of your mouth about an inch away, and shout CAT CAT CAT.
There'll be no problem.
Now shout PAT PAT PAT, and you'll feel the air pushing against your hand.

That air is too much for a sensitive mic.
It mostly happens with words that start with B-vowel or P-vowel.
Just practice with your hand in front of your mouth. You'll learn how to do it without creating a big airflow.

This is what a pop filter is for. I find they help a lot, but it's always still possible to overload the mic.

Thanks stein your a legend mate. I found moving the pop filter like you said has helped too slightly..i've recorded something now..it's arounf 15 seconds..just needs dropping in on a gap of a instrumental..is that okay or too much for u to work with? i feel bad like if i was to record a whole rap and ask you to mix it..:)

Don't feel bad Master. Although 15 seconds will be enough to know if it sounds good or not. :)

Sure, feel free to post up the backing and the raw vox and I'll take a look now.

yeah mate uh its roughly that long..ill post everything up now..

you know for mp3 what should i set the bit rate mono and bit rate stereo at for export?

24bit 44.1kHz or 44.8kHz would be fine.

Do the backing in stereo and the vocal in mono please.

Rap vocals raw no effect RS by RS Music on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free here is the raw vocals..the 'yeahh' at the start i want it kind of just as an effect a bit like uk rapper gigs..the rest is fine just as a rap verse/vocals..you'll also see they are timed exactly to where they need to drop on the instrumental as i've not cut anything or moved them..just straight export from raw recording..

hi steen just realised i cut the silent off at the start of the track on the instrumental my side..so just do that it should all flow..apologies..

Ok master, I took a look.

I'm pretty certain this isn't lined up correctly, but not to worry, lol.

I duno, it doesn't sound too bad to me, but my initial reaction was that your voice sounds a lot duller here than it did in the three clips earlier.
Did you change anything?

Anyways, see what you think. That's the important bit.

yeah the vocals i put in the last one aren't lined up right theyre slightly out..want me to send em you lined up right? for the track with backing..also that sounds good..but i thought you were mixing the backing track v raw vocals?

No, I meant I haven't lined them up properly, but it doesn't matter. We're only concerned with the sound.

I've mixed your vocal with the backing.
The point is to ascertain whether your problem is recording related or mixing related. :)

If you're like "oh wow steen, that sounds great", then your problem has been in mixing.
If you're like, "nah steen, that sucks", then either I suck, or your recording methods have been the problem.
