Hello,

I'm thinking about getting a VERY CHEAP second-hand mic preamp for running into a guitar amp or a sound card.

The sound does not need to be good/transparent (which would be impossible with a guitar amp in the first place), only legible.

Would a dedicated pocket-pre or one of those Behringer mini-mixers better suit my needs for those purposes?

Thanks-

What are you trying to accomplish? You'd probably be better off just buying a cheapo radio shack high impedance mic. Then you can just plug it straight into either.

Yeah, a cheap second hand preamp or a little mixer should work ok for plugging your electric guitar into your soundcard... but, you don't need either for plugging your electric guitar into a guitar amp.

Oh, I'm talking about using a mic... for vocals.

I have some of those cheapo radio shack mics, but their sound is very muddy. I also have a cheapo XLR mic which can produce more legible vocals.

I think I might go with a Behringer mini-mixer, that way I can EQ it for the mic and not have to adjust everything on the amp.

Won't sound very good, but it'll work, right?

Sorry about the confusion.
I'm just looking for something to use to connect an XLR mic to a guitar amp.

Go to Radio Shack and get an XLR to 1/4" adapter / transformer.

If you're using a condenser mic, then you'll need phantom power -- in which case, yea, go and get a Behringer Eurorack mini mixer for like 50 bucks.

So all that is really needed for a dynamic mic is impedance matching, not extra gain as well?

That's correct.

But, you will need a preamp for plugging your mic into your soundcard.
