yes i also put this in the clinic.

this is the first recording i have done of a band that is not my own!!!!
i had never recorded acoustic guitar, chord organ, or this genre of music. Plus i just messed with some stuff, room mics on the drums on top of close mics, a mic on the top and bottom of the floor tom, some stereo micing etc.....

I kinda like it. The singing reminds me of the talking heads. If it were me, I'd raise the vocals and slap a mild reverb on it. :)
 
Can you give me a little more on how it rates as an amature recording, like what are the major standout flaws the keep it from sounding "profesional"

And some sugestions to change those problems, also what you liked and what sounds good could help..

It's got a vibe and it doesn't sound like anything I've heard around here. It doesn't sound like an mtv/"pro" recording, but that's a good thing. It sounds original and that's why I like it. You don't have to sound "pro" to make a good recording. Check out bands like the strokes...

I say, good job!

Mainly, it's a neat little song.
 
It really reminds me of the talking heads and I love the talking heads, so.... :) To anyone else listening, hear it the whole way through...

honestly man, this is a really good recording. i mean if you sent this out for mastering, they could probably polish it up very well. it's got a really cool feel to it, just needs a little bit of "shine" to it, but there's really not much to be done as far as improvements. nice job.
 
From the way you set up the post I was expecting the worst! But this actually doesn't sound bad at all (listening on Sony 7506 headphones). I agree that the vocal is kinda buried though. I would try to bring it up a couple dB.
 
I am not a fan of the panning, and for me it sounds a bit cloudy. Could be a bit brighter. Drums tend to be a bit overbearing/muddy.

I think the vocals are too quiet. Bring 'em up a db or two and keep everything else. It's a neat song! Makes me wanna stomp and clap and shit.
 
just out of interest, how did you record the acoustic guitar?
 
I used a stereo pair of condesors with a real narrow patern, one aimed at the neck about 8 to 10 frets up and the other about at the bridge, in a y patern on one of those duel neck mic clips, all about 18" form the guitar itself, i didnt eq it at all, just some compression to taste.

That was my first acoustic recording, and it turned out great in my opinion.

I just took the two mics and blended them together. Its quite literally "by the books" but it worked.
 
Wow man, that was really good. I listened to it on a lousy pair of computer speakers and with my Sony earbuds, so I can't give the most accurate response regarding quality. However, for the gear that you have, this is a great recording. I was especially surprised by the big drum sound you got going; I do think the cymbals are a bit harsh, but again, that could be my listening devices. The acoustic sounds really good, too. The vocals could use a little boosting, but overall, it's a really solid track. Very Arcade Fire. I'd love to hear more.

I'm also happy to have heard this, as I am planning on getting a Firepod and a pair of KRK Rokit5's myself. The quality of this track is making it easier for me to justify spending the money :)
 
vox up, chord organ down.

The cymbal crashes are so loud they make my eyes blink when they hit....perhaps tame those down too.

Overall all you are a few adjustments and a great mastering enginer away from something akin to U2's "The Joshua Tree"

Good job.
 
Man thats a really good job you did. I do agree that the vox could come up a db but not much more. Take the cymbal down a bit and your right there. Add a little more brightness to the overall mix and it will be killer. Who is the band?

A clever bunch of lads. Good mix!

A bad mix of a good song can even sound great to someone, and I enjoyed the song so my critique will be a little off.

I liked the panning, would've put some verb on the vox. I liked the multiple takes to emphasize certain lines of the lyrics. I would've made the highs on the acoustic stand out a bit more...that's really all though, it was a really cool mix of a song that I will prob listen to again...

So are you gonna do their whole demo or whatever? You gotta keep us posted!
 
real nice work, like everyone else said..just turn up the vocals a bit and your ok..good work..
 
Vocals need to be brought out a bit at points.
Use volume automation for this and maybe use some boost around 3K to bring more presence to it.
The vocals start very buried but as the song goes on they end up at a decent level.
The acoustic guitar in the left is panned to far. Id bring it in a bit so you sides are balanced.
Toms could use some work on the EQ.

Sounds good.
