Ok, pretty simple question I believe. For those of you familar with the Behringer UB 802 mixer, if not heres a great detailed picture of the mixer:

Basically I am using ACID 4.0 and I have a mic plugged into the XLR in channel 1. I will be recording my vocals and my guitar amp at different times, separately. I will also be using loops for drums and bass inside the acid program.

I can either:

a)run a 1/4" from the mixers "FX SEND" to my Sound Blaster Live! LINE IN with a 1/8" adapter
b)run a Y cable from the mixers "TAPE OUT" to my Sound Blaster Live! LINE IN

The above information I gathered from my other thread, located here.

The problem is how can I hear the tracks I have already recorded and at the same time here the track I am currently recording (like vocals). I am trying to understand exactly what cords I need and where they need to be plugged into etc..

Any help on this would be very much appreciated. I am gettin closer to being able to record a song!

Thanks in advance

I used to have a SBLive connected to my Behringer mixer UB1002. I remember that I used Y-cables most of the time. You could plug the speaker out from the SBLive to your mixer´s tape in, then connect your headphones to the phone out and you´re ready to listen while you record. Another option could be find an amp and a pair of speakers, monitors would be better, but I think you could start with creative pc speakers (5.1 sound systems). Then connect the SBLive speaker out to your amp, and the headphones to your amp phones out and you will be ready for basic monitoring. In both cases you will need a 1/8 plug-rca Y cable.

Hope this helps

I think I need a Y cable with 2x 1/4" mono on one side and 1/8" stereo on the other which I will buy tomorrow and test this theory. Thanks for posting

Well, you will need another Y cable with 1/8 plug - 2 RCA.This cable needs to be plugged into mixer´s tape in, coming from SB Live line out or speaker out, I´m not sure if there are both in SBLive. The other cable (2 mono 1/4 plug - 1/8 stereo mini plug) you´re planning to buy must be connected from your mixers main out to soundcard´s line in. That way yo should record and monitor as well.

if u route the soundcard back to the mixer (even running through the tape in) you'll hear it all but it'll all be recorded. believe me. I own the ub802 and tried that....invest in a small headphone amp so you can route both the mixer and the soundcard to it.

I dont think thats right distorted. I recorded last night with it going out from FX send and back in thru tape in and recorded 4 separate voice tracks...none had bleeding from the others that I could tell with the naked ear anyways.

hrm...i hope i dont need another piece of equip grrr..

As long as you use the FX send as the recording output you don't need an extra headphone amp. This is a separate bus from the mains so there is no feedback loop. You can run the soundcard outputs back into the stereo aux return, tape in,or channels 3/4, 5/6 and hear everything through the 802 headphone out. Just make sure that the FX knobs are turned all the way down on the soundcard return channels or it will loop.

If you press tape to ctrl room button what comes out from the soundcard wont be recorded again.

Question for Cincy Kid

What's up Cincy Kid, this is Poppa Doc here and i got a question for you. ON your recordings through the behringer 802 board you got how do you eliminate all of that hissing and air that comes in your vocal tracks or do you have that problem i got a behringer 2442 fx 12 channel board and was running a Y-connector out of the main outs on the mixer board into a 1/8 connector to my computer's soundcard audio input and don't know why that hissing and noise interference was entering my vocal tracks could you help me out on that

question

Maybe i was wrong for running the recording signal out of the main outs on the mixer board huh???? Because i was reading what you wrote and how are you recording through the ub 802 through the fx send into the computer i understand the part about routing it back to the mixer into the tape ins and listen to the playback and current recording tracks through the control room but how are you getting audio from your mic into the mic input then out through the fx send then into the computer is that how you're keeping hissing and noise out of your vocal tracks????????????? very important i need to know asap before i purchase more equipment

I dont have any hissing sorry. i am still very new myself. I just had a friend give me his M-Audio Quattro sound card so I am going to try it tomorrow. It has gotten poor reviews but for free its got to be better than my 16 bit soundblaster live card =)

good luck poppa ~

Poppa,

What you are hearing is most likely the noise floor of the mixer being attenuated by the gain structure you are using or possibly due to some bad cabling.
You may want to start a thread of your own .... listing your equipment, how you have it all connected and how you go about setting your levels (gain structure).
What soundcard and software you are using.

A few things that come to mind .....
You shouldn't have to crank the gain or faders way up on the mixer to get a decent level from the mic to the mains. If you do, then you may have an impedance issue or faulty mic cable.
Also you shouldn't have to crank up the mains fader to get a decent level into the computer. If you go beyond Unity gain (0db) ... you will bring up the noise floor substantially (equipment internal noise .... Hisssss).
You should not use a Mic IN of a soundcard as the input of a line level device such as a mixer (pre amping a pre amp = more noise) ... not to mention if you are using a consumer soundcard, the pre amp on the Mic In is substandard to say the least. Use a Line In on the soundcard and use the soundcards control panel/mixer applet to adjust the level of that input.
