Lines in on Mixers

Greetings,

Generally I consider myself a reasonably creative person (back in kindergarden I turned some pasta and paste into works of art)

So I think that Mackie VLZ Pro 1402 is pretty cool considering I don't need 24 tracks or anything.

But I am wondering why all the line level inputs?
Sounds silly I know but humor me here...

its got 6 XlR's/mono line ins which is cool for some mics..

then an additional 4 stereo pairs of line levels....

So i can see a bass direct box...1 mono
Keyboard? ok....1 stereo pair...
What am i missing?
MAybe returns of my drum machine if i sequnce?

the possible realm of line level stuff from my puny mind is then;
1 Direct box for bass, 1 KEyboard, 1 Drum machine

Is that a "typical" homerecording setup?

The line inputs are for the returns from say an 8 track recorder or a DAW. They are also usefull for effects returns, connecting CD players, video decks and tape decks. The mackie mixers are not only targeted at home recording but live sound and multimedia.

They also help the people in marketing, for example my Behringer 2004a, they can call it say a 20 channel mixer when it only has 8 mic pre's, 12 channel strips (4 stereo) and two stereo aux returns.
 
garak what are your views on your 2004a? i have the same mixer and i have had absolutely no problems with it... you?
 
The preamps don't sound great and it has bad crosstalk problems. I didn't notice the crosstalk untill after the first 8 hour recording session.

When I was tracking I had the click track playing on the alt buss and it blead threw on all of the tracks. I didn't really notice it untill I got my new yorkville YSM-1i montiors and now I can hear it loud and clear. Its really bad because when you hit the mute button its assigned to the alt buss and I can still hear it on the main buss.

Now I take the output directly from the preamps and into my soundcard, a Delta 44.
 
hey garak i have the delta 44 too... what system are you using and what OS?

i am going to test that crosstalk problem when i have time, thanks...
 
I'm using CEP running on win98SE right now. I think the computer is a PIII 733 with 256 megs of ram with a 30 gig 7200 rpm drive. The computer I'm using belongs to the band I'm working with now.

I have a pair of 57's and a C1 right now going into the 2004a and I split the output from the insert into the delta 44 and it goes on into the channel strip for montioring.

At first I didn't hear the click bleed through untill I looked at the meeters when the gain was right down on everything but the click track and the click track was muted so it was on the alt buss. I could see the meters on the delta control panel jump to the click about 5 or 10 db. Then later on I was trying somecompression on a bass track and the click track poped right out. I tried noise gates and notch filters to try and get rid of it but no luck. After that I switched to the inserts and no problems since.

For reference, I too have been using a Delta 44 in conjunction with a MX-1604A from Behringer. I purchased both based in large part on review and commentary from actual users (and of course the technical specs.)

I did my own Q.C. of the mixer after reading so many negative comments in these particular forums about Behinger mixers and Behinger Q.C. in general, but all the ports and knobs seem to work just fine -- one thing I didn't check however is this "bleed through" you mention. I've just check now (only on the 11/12 channel strip) with everything in the chain set to max volume, and I hear *nothing* coming from my Mackie HR824's.

I guess what I'm getting at, is that it may be possible to repair your mixer...

shit i really hop emine has no bleed. can't test now, must study for finals...
