Line vs mic input on Sony

I had been using a sound devices mm-1 > line input on a Sony pcm m10 to use lavs double system sound with my dslrs.

Now that I am using the Sony a7 series, the built in pre amps seem to be "good enough" so I can plug a wireless unit directly into the camera and get audio "good enough" for broadcast news at least.

But my question is, when using the pcm- m10 or the 100 I have on order as independent recorders, do I get better sound routinely running mics that do not require phantom power via the
mm-1 > line input on the recorders vs using the mic inputs on the recorders in terms of noise floor for nature and environmental recordings

The best way to answer that question is to plug it in and find out.
 
I agree, but my aged ears are no longer good or "trained" enough to pick up subtle differences that others might hear.
 
Something with a tight pattern and a deadcat would be what Id use...

Ok, no. This is the best way to answer the question. Ignore it completely and just spew some random bullshit that doesn't have anything to do with it.

I was going to say that you can measure the difference in noise floor using tools other than your ears, but I like this better.
 
You can waste your time measuring it...or eliminate it...his question was about outdoor shooting...believe me...Ive had to EQ out Cicadas last year at several outdoor events...its better to get what you want the first time...than try to fix it in post...

His question was which input would give better noise specs. The answer to that is whichever one produces less noise. Has nothing to do with what he's shooting or where. The specific mic being used may have some effect, but probably not much. Maybe his next question will be which mic rig you think would be best, but that ain't what he asked.
 
I ran across some threads in some other forums and it seems using the sd mm-1 with handheld recorders is not uncommon.

Some folks report good results. Too bad the unit doesn't have an easy way to mount it to a recorder
