Line-in vs. USB/Firewire

I was also wondering which would be better between line in and usb interfaces. I am newbie at home recording and just getting ready to buy my first set up stuff and wondered what you thought:

- Maya MK2 - $109
- Alto or Behringer (cheap mixer) - $50-$80
- Shure SM57

I will be recording my vocals, vocal harmonies, and acoustic/electric guitar and want to make sure I am going the right path. I want to do it cheaply at first until I learn more. Does this look like a good starting set up or does someone have some other advice? Do I stay PCI? or go USB?

Thanks ~

Get the tascam 428 with a cheap pre amp and record with the vocal volume low and you will get professional "warm" vocals I had someone at one of the studios around here ask me what studio I record in and using the tascam 428 reminds me of using the mackie digital 8 bus that I use when I record in the main studio.

Ok well my behringer ub1204fx is either going to go into a edirol ua-3 or a tascam 428, then into my laptop via usb, the latter of the two soundcards is more expensive tho, so is it worth paying extra or will there not be that massive a difference between soundcards?

I was under the impression that PCI was a better route to go instead of USB interface due to latency and other issues.

What is PCI? The problem is, i only really have the option of usb as an input on my laptop, as it is not big enough for a line-in or a soundcard fitted, so i dont really have an option other than usb, so could someone help me on the tascam/edirol question?

PCI is the connection interface that fits into your motherboard in your computer. I believe they make PCMIA cards for laptops that have the LINE IN you can use.

I looked at both of those USB devices you listed and the tascam appears to be far better.

My 2 cents anyways
