line-in vs mic'd amp

I may be "old school" but I prefer to get the sound as cloce as possible to what I want the finished sound to be before i start recording. Granted, this leaves little or no room for error and mistakes mean redoing the track. The main drawback is if the track dosen't sit right (with other tracks) later on. There is very little that can be done to fix this other than record the track again.

I agree when you're talking about tone, but I can't think of any reason to record time modulation effects (delay, chorus, flange, etc.) in the raw tracks unless you don't have the means of adding it later. Unless it's important to your sound to have the time effects come before the amp sound for some reason, I guess...

Yeah, I don't do anything but distortion in the recording. Digital FX are just as good on those things. But I just can't be impressed with digital distortions, at least what I have and have heard.

I also agree on playing clean vs playing distorted. People play differently depending on what they hear.

I wish I had enough inputs for a clean and distorted signal! I use a Firepod, 8 inputs only.
