okay i live in Australia and i bought a line 6 spider 4 75W amp from America and i foolishly used an Australian cable to plug it in and as you can guess there was some smoke. Anyway now that i plug it in with a transformer to take to the correct American voltage the amp turns on and all the lights and screen work perfectly its just that the amp hums no matter what the volume is. Also it doesn't pick up any guitar. At first i though that i blew the fuse because i used the australian cord but if i did the amp wouldnt turn on at all right?
So yeah ill see what you guys think because i am just out of ideas
Thanks to any replys

well under normal cirumstances a humming amp requires power supply filters... this is by no means normal circumstance but still a good place to start... what kinda background do you have in electronics if at all??? do you know a good tech??? you may need a complete rebuild of the supply... but with any luck it didn't get into the amp it's self... where is the smoke showing on the board... you may have seriously screwed the pooch...

wow ur lucky it even turns on at all now!

if u blew a fuse (that acts as a safety aganist power surge) u shouldnt be able to turn it on at all..so to me its more likely u've blown one of the other components on board.. the fact that it turns on points me to a processing component and not a circuit component... which mean itd be quite impossible to replace urself..

on the bright side its a great excuse to upgrade~billy hyde always do great deals~

p.s. its great to hear from a fellow aussie

p.p.s i am by no mean an electrician so everything i said is just from my logical understanding and some diy works.. so take with a grain of salt

It's just cause it's a line 6 :laughings:

But seriously, Check the solder points on the inputs of your amp.

Yep, I would bet the 2x voltage coming off the transformer secondary blew the power supply filter caps, and maybe melted a reg or two. Take it to a competent tech for repair. And while it's there, a lot of amps have selectable 110V/220V, sometimes external, sometimes internal jumper, something the transformer leads need to be jiggled around.

Damn weak-ass American product that can't take good honest Aussie electricity at 240V without frying...

I'm not understanding the cable bit... you're not going to get a US cable to plug into an Aus power point... the pins are different.

Most devices are made to handle various power sources.. ie. they don't make a US version, a British version, an Australian version (as far as I know, anyway)... and the switch for the various voltages is located fairly prominently on the back, or perhaps less prominently inside.

Be heading to my local amp repair shop if I were you! Good luck.
