Should I be limiting audio peaks on the way in or on the way out to the CD Burner? Does one way work better than another? If so what software or device works best to handle this?
could you give more detail please ? are you trying to take a stereo wave file on the pc and burn to CD ? or are you talking about recording on the pc
a track then burning ? if the former i use a peak limiter plug in within the multitrack software i have and set it for -3db to give the mastering engineer room for manipulation. if the latter you can use an outboard comp/lim going in
or record at -6 to -3db max and then fix up the track.
its important you dont smack everything right up to 0db.
peace.
You would use a limiter on the way In to avoid clipping the soundcard's converters.
However, if you set the recording level appropriately, you shouldn't need to limit. Unless of course the dynamics of the voice is all over the place, then you may what to limit and compress a little.
And , as has been stated, keep the levels just under 0db.
