Kinda surprised that no one has brought up opto-compressors, which use a light bulb and optical attenuator to create compression/limiting.
Erm .................
If you get a light detector and plug the output of that into your speaker, THEN maybe you'll have a compressor. Until then you'll mostly have a lightbulb.
That's kinda what I was getting at ..............

Hi Noisedude.....yer, I saw your good post earlier and remembered it.
Wish other people would go back thru the post every now and again, just to keep up with the subject, and not make other's feel like you do!! (I guess?).
Anyways.....you were spot on!!
I also liked 666's comments!
Kindest Regards,
Superspit.

I hope you understand that as of about right now I can't be cordial with you any more. You see, we're about to lose the Ashes and I can't be seen to be fraternising with the opposition. :D

And to you ... shame about Watson ... haha

Now if we just had Vaughan, Trescothick and Simon Jones with us, it might not matter that Harmison, Ian Bell and Freddie aren't fully fit!!! :( :(

I have a pair of Marantz Model 15 solid state 2 channel power amplifiers from the mid-late 1970's that use two light bulbs in each channel as part of the overload protection circuit. When you get into overload the lightbulbs light up and attenuates the signal.

thanx for the info Zac......often wondered how the whole rep thing works.
What are rep point(s) actually worth anyway (2 points, 10 points etc)...is the amount of points variable/proportional to something.(other than bad or good?).
Ta again.

No problem, mate. Rep point amount depends on the rep power of the giver. For example, you might get rep from someone with a rep power of 6, and if you click on the post, you'll see that it says "Post is positive" or whatever it says. But if you get green from someone with 6,000, it'll say "Your reputation on this post is Extremely Positve." Or something like that.

i don't think so :)

each opposite polarity rep poster would have to have

the same rep power

actually, grey chicklets

are given by people who have zero rep power

and, if you have an idea of

who might have given you the rep

put him on "ignore" in your user cp

if it was that poster

the rep will disappear from your list

Grey chicklets also stand for neutralizing rep, though. Someone with a high rep power might give you some red, and then someone else might give you some green, and that will show up grey on that post regardless of their rep power because they're cancelling out the previous rep.

grey dots even out rep on a post. so if someone neg reps a post and someone else greens it, it shows up grey.

Um, no, I really don't think so.... grey rep is rep from someone who has no rep power, I believe.

The rep given to the post from a specific person shows up in your user control panel. If someone gives me green for a post and another gives me red, they show up as green and red respectively. I have such a case going at this moment. You are correct, however, in that the message displayed when I click on the rep icon for that post represents the accumulative rep total, however, I can tell you from personal investigation that grey or blue rep come from people with neutral or negative rep.

Hey! That makes sense...so the more rep power you have, the greater the rep you can give....then would the reverse be true?

Yeah you pretty much have it now. Unlike Steve Harmison who appears to have lost it.
