A good guitar sound is a good guitar sound period. It's not the matter of it working better for one person...

I would never challenge it to take the place of a good combo, BUT it's a tool, and it does work.... The question is, can we make it work.

I agree it can be done. I do use the modelers sometimes, but I like the sound of a tube amp just pushed enough so it compresses and slightly crunches. That, for me is one of the harder tones to get from a modeler. Want gonzo distortion, walls of marshalls, shred? Modeler makes it simple and easy.

My best results have come from the Boss GT-3, actually, though I have a J-Station and a V-Amp2. I have tweaked myself silly! Others might think the tones I dialed in are great--and some are close. Then, I'll mike up my amp and there it is--the real thing in its glory. It just sounds better to me. Ten years from now, when I listen back to old stuff I did, I know I'll be happy with the guitar tracks.

Then again--in ten years they might have a modeler so good that I'll throw my tube amp away!

I like my POD. Yea when recording direct it doesn't sound as good as a real amp miked up all nice, but when comparing a 100 watt all tube marshall with a POD/poweramp rig, I'd take the latter. I used to have a marshall DSL 2000 and when I got my POD I put the Marshall away.

Here we go again- the debate is irrelevent. POD vs. an amp mic'd up?- NOT! POD into a power amp into a cab mic'd up is more versatile and produces a wider range of good sound than either of the above. The POD only sucks for y'all because y'all persist in using it as a direct box. I'm with you Blue Bear, I want a real cone and a real mic, but how is that incompatible with POD?
BTW, Fender, not Marshall, Epiphone, not Squier, Vai or Johnson, neither one. Gibson, not Fender, tastes good, not less filling.-Richie
 
Pod sounds lovely

I said it before, I like the Pod cuz you don't have to burn your ears to get an edge to your sound.

Bottom line: I'm just to damn lazy to mic an amp!

Alright, I'm a little late to this thread but I think I qualify for a comment as I just GAVE AWAY my POD. WHAT...the pod lovers scream. No, I'm not sick of endless amp models and effects.

I picked up a Tech 21 trademark 10 amplifier. Yes just 10 watts. This little sucker is truly amazing. Amp modeling, three switches give plenty options for amp/speaker combos, but thats just the beginning. The spring reverb is better sounding than any I've heard which is amazing for so small a package. The sound is KILLER, no shit. sounds like a little mini half stack. Any sound from 60's surf to deftones type distortion. On top of that it has an effects loop which I route through an MPX1 processor for trippy fx. And it's made by sansamp so they provide an XLR direct sansamp output.
Now I used to love jamming into the wee hours of the night on my POD with 'phones, the thing is now I just plug a jack into phones out on the amp (speaker defeat)and monitor off the the xlr out in my mixer. The recorded tracks kick the balls so far off my POD that I gave it away..free.
The real kicker is micing the amp out of phase with the direct out mixed in to taste just KILLS. Moving the mic two inches results in the most dramatic mid eq sweep. I'll never again reach for the knob (knock on wood) This is by far the best amp simulator I've ever heard and a great amp to boot.

Anyone else heard this or any other tech 21 amp? I'm looking to get the next one up. The only drawback is the $300 pricetag, alot for a 10 watter. But I couldn't argue once I heard it. Still cheaper than a pod. Trust me you'll never even look at your beloved POD after buying one of these...there is life after the POD.

at 3am your loud marshalls and fenders are useless.

I have a POD and love the little thing. It really makes late night jams and recording possible for lots of us.

but I mean in the optimal situation a mic'd amp is the real stuff, but at 3am its alot of hassle to mic and crank and amp to record an idea that just dropped into your head.

with all of the POD"s sounds you can have avery well built demo done by 6am using nothing but the POD, and wakling up nobody in th process.

The POD definately has advantages in certain situations.


Ask any touyring guitarist making money from his playing if he's dragging marshalls and mics up to the hotel room to record and write with.

I doubt it. The POD has revolutionized the mobile recording setup.
 
Ive found that my Les Paul with no effects tied to a marshall amp is excellent for good metal sound, and my Fender is best suited for crisp clear sounds. In regards to the pod and others, I haven't owned one as of yet, I have a Korg Toneworks for the latenight silent stuff.
