I picked up a Lexicon Lpx 5 off ebay a short time ago off ebay but I wasn't aware there there was a big difference between the Lpx 1 and the 5.I'm looking for a dedicated reverb like the Lpx 1 but they are getting harder to find. Can anyone give me some possible alternatives to the Lpx 1 in the under $400 price range? After hearing the Lexicon I cringe when I hear these software verbs I've been toying with for the last few years.

SOR, please do let us know your impressions between the LXP15 w/mod and the PCM90. I am really curious since I've never heard the 90. I like my LXP though.

Looking forward to your post.
Dennis

I know it's been a bit, but I got to A/B the two, the Jim Williams mod LXP-15II and the PCM90. I have only a/b'd on some rough drum tracks, but I've tried to get the same general verb on the presets of each to get a feel for it. Well, the PCM has a lot more reverb presets since it is a dedicated reverb processor. I've mainly compared the plates and halls. The PCM sounds deeper, like the sound should be coming out of a 3 unit rack. The sound is what I would expect to hear from a 3 or 4 unit sized rack box, deep and big are the only adjectives that are coming to mind, spatially 3d. Now the LXP is no slouch by any means, and the Dark Hall setting I'm thinking will be the preset that ends in the effects sends on my board, unless I track with the Rich Plate on the PCM (love it on drums, as well as Cool Plate and Real Hall) and side chain it. Anyway, the quality of the LXP is wonderful, and I can't wait to mess with it some more. Drum Plate and Warm Plate were two I was comparing against the PCM. The tails sound great. Not quite as "deep" as the PCM in sonic depth, but a wonderful sounding box. I really need to explore both more, and will in time, but thought I'd give an honest update. If I get around to it, I'll post some clips with a couple of different presets so you can hear each.

Thanks Seeker for posting this. You've gone above and beyond on this one and I appreciate your time and sharing.

I'm really happy with my LXP and for now it works just fine for me, but I will eventually get the PCM when prices come down. Eventually newer models will come out and people will be selling their 'old' PCM's... That is when I will buy one. :)

Thanks again for sharing, you're an asset to Home Recording.

My Very Best,
Dennis

Dennis, you give me too much credit, but I appreciate spreading the word. I think gearslutz does some clip posting of units, but don't see it as much here. Hopefully I'm helping to give a little insight on what I think of these boxes I bought. Now, I mentioned the "deep" sound of the PCM, but I will say that the LXP, maybe due to the mod, seemed to have a smoother sounding reverb in general, just not quite as rich. Again, I only played around with them for about an hour. I recorded some snare hits and A/B'd them then recorded the whole kit and went searching through the presets, writing down the number when I heard something I liked. The LXP seemed a little brighter, too. The PCM seems a little dark and a little midrangey when I soloed it. When I had the whole kit going and was switching back and forth between the two, the solo character kind of got lost and then I could judge better on the overall contribution each one made to the sound. Fun stuff, though. Tedious, but fun.

Anyone else want to share, Dennis you too, any of their favorite presets (at least as a base starting point before you modify them to your liking) for the LXP-1, LXP-15, or PCM 90/91 on different applications? Mine so far are drum plate, warm plate, dark hall and a combo effect (I believe it was number 126 with chorus, reverb) on drums for the LXP-15 and Rich Plate, Real Hall, Cool Plate, Fat Drums for drums on the PCM.

Seeker, I wish I could fulfill your request but I am in the process of moving and have my system torn down. All my music equipment will be in storage and my music creation days are on hold for some time.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the presets I was experimenting with when I had the unit hooked up, but I was impressed with it even though it isn't modded. When I get my system up and running again, I will be sending my LXP-15 to have this done.

Again, thanks for responding and my best to you and yours.
Dennis

No time like the present... not like you'll miss it while it's being worked on...

In a similar boat up here, moved to a smaller place while we're building a house in N. Ireland, everything's racked in anvil cases down in the basement, and I've just got a mackie sattelite up in the bedroom to goof around with... limiting, and freeing at the same time... (but it's driving me nuts)
