Lexicon MPX500

i prefer the mpx1 to be honest, i have 2 of em and love them to death
 
there has been a guy trying to sell an rnc in either the hot delas or frees adss section go check there
 
How do YOU guys put something like that, an outboard signal processor, into the chain? I know you patch it in, but where in the chain is it?
 
Auxileries. All the tracks run into the mixer and then just pick a send and patch the outboard to that send. patch the returns to the desk, done!
 
Hmm,,, OK, how would you do that with a DAW?
Here's my typical set-up:
Source>Mic>Mic Pre>AD/DA Converter>Sound Card Via light pipe.
Then I have another chain that goes like this:
Source>mic>Mic Pre on mixer>Sound card via light pipe.
The second chain I don't use as much because the AD/DA converters are better on the outboard unit, as well as the outboard mic pre's. The mixer is a yamaha O1V and its primary use is a control surface for the DAW.
I could put it in after the outboard pre's, but then I'd be recording....wet? Right?
 
what you need to do is set up your DAW (in your case Nuendo) to send the channel you want to run an outboard processor on through it's own channel output.

i.e. say you have your whole mix going into the o1V on Ch 1/2 on lightpipe, you need to send your vocals (for example) through Ch 3. On the O1V, connect an Auxilery send to the outboatrd unit and the outputs of the outboard unit back through the O1V's returns. now you can use your outboard unit on any instrument. i wouldn't insert the outboard procesor into your recording chain, becuase you'll be stuck with it.

OK, I want to use the 8I/O converters because they are much better than the O1V's. But once a signal goes to the 8I/O, thats it, from there it goes to Nuendo, via light pipe.
So, how could I by-pass the O1V's converters, use the 8I/O's converters, and still have an Aux Send to patch in an outboard effect? The O1V has 4 Aux outs.
I believe that if I bring a signal into the O1V's channel strip, its going to use its converters. Obviously, I don't want to "Double Convert".
I dunno, I'm confused. The only way I can see doing it is to patch in the effects unit, after the pre's, but before the 8I/O??
May be someone can come over to my house and hold my hand! lol!!
 
y'know when you do your mix in nuendo. what are you mastering to, and how do you get the sound out of the computer. does anything go through the O1V? the only way i can think about doing it is by running 8 outs from nuendo into the O1V.
 
one tricky way......and i think you'll need very low latency.


do everything as normal in nuendo. send the channel you want to add fx to through the lightpipe, convert to analog and hook up to the input of the processor. hook the outputs to the lightpipe convertor inputs and send it back into Nuendo. when you hit play, your FX'd channels should be heard too and you should be able to record them to a track in Nuendo....theoretically.

ive only sketchily thought this out so dont hit me if it doesn't work!

Well, I'm mastering in Nuendo. And mixing down to a wav file. You know, Nuendo records the fader movements, or animations as well. Then when you "mix down" to wav, or some other file format, there's an option to "Include Animations". As far as getting the sound out of the computer, thats what the 8I/O does, the outputs from it go to my audio monitors. I have 6 audio monitors so I can do surround sound 5.1. The monitors are all routed to output busses inside Nuendo....... hmmmm! ( I see said the blind man)
So maybe I could come out of the output on the 8I/O in to the effects unit, out of the effects unit, into the O1V, and back into nuendo that way? I guess it would look like this:
Mic>Mic Pre>8 I/O(inputside)>Nuendo>8 I/O (output side)>effects unit>Then either to the O1V board, or back into the 8 I/O (input side).
Tricky. It almost seems like there could be a funky in/out loop there on the 8I/O, but I suppose if you bussed it right, it would work.
I do have very low latency BTW.

the o1v doesn't need to be invovled in the signal chain.

i just bought Waves gold package. the compressors are excellent, i got it mainly for the L1 Ultramizer upgrade. i had the older version. the reverbs haven't impressed me though. mind you, im not really one for plug in reverb.

very impressed though.

Well, the O1V really isn't in the signal chain. I use it mainly as a control surface for nuendo, but it does give me an additional 8 inputs, should I ever need them.
 
Well, I've had my mpx500 for about a week now and I'm very happy with it...:D I believe that this unit has more headroom than the ensoniq dp4 had.I like the reverb very lush,full and usable.I am going to spend some time tweaking the unit and come up with some of my own patches.Hey, Bruce do you have any customized presets that you would like to share with us ....vocals,drums,guitar presets that are some what universal?
 
TC vs. Lex

Although the most people (like Bruce) will choose the mpx500 over the M-One, I'm curious how the M-One XL (with its M3000 presets and updated ambience reverbs) will stack up against the mpx500.

I have the slightest clue regarding the M-one xl.All I now is that I was looking for a reverb unit that I could tweak without scrolling through a million screens and buttons to achieve a desired effect.With the lexicon I've noticed it's very straight forward.Another thing is it's amazing how every unit has like atleast 100 presets or more.I'm the type that likes to find 10 quality presets and that's it.
 
Hello Bruce, I read your post on the MPX500 vs the MPX1 I thought the big difference in the units was the MPX! comes with 2 chips the Lexichip for thr verbs and the other for everything else does the MPX500 have the Lexichip also? I am in total agreement on the Lexicons over the TC stuff intially I brought home the the TC and returned after a few days for the Lexicon first the 500(again for a few days) then I settled on the MPX1 and have not been disapointed.
This is why I shop at guitar center they have the 30 day return policy and never screw with me about it plus so far they have provided the lowest prices on ALL my purchases the last couple of years.

Silus..... yup, the 500 has the Lexichip - actually the 500 is a 24-bit unit, the 1 is not (at least, that was the case a year ago...)


Harley.... ya know what? I never use the user presets.......... (except to recall a session for convenience if I shut down the unit!)

I always use the factory presets to ballpark the effect I want and then I customize it to the track...... I've used the same setting twice yet -- basically it's got to be different for every track!

MPX 500 discontinued

I believe the MPX 500 is discontinued. what happened to me was this...I bought an MPX 200 that had something wrong with the volume pot. Unforunately, when I brought it back, some jerk-off salesmane told me I was too late and could not exchange it. Eventually, I brought it back and spoke to a manager and got my money back, or a store credit actually. At that point I decided I did not like the 200 that much (it worked sometimes) and wanted to upgrade to a 500 however, the store was out of stock. I ordered the 500 and waited. Eventually, the manager told me that there would be no 500 because they wer discontinued. I then looked at some other replaement models and was unable to decide. I had looked at the PCM models, the TC M-One, M3000, still could not decide.
Finally, I got a call from the store and despite the managers explanation, I was told the 500 had come in. I then looked on the Lexicon web sight and saw that there was, in fact, no more 500 but now there was a 550. I was going to really give that a*&hole some ^%$# but eventually thought better of it and let it go deciding to purchase a PC
81 which I got today. So far I love the thing. I am planning to add an Avalon pe amp and a UAD owevefethat will complete my sysstem.

oops, screwed up the end of that last post. Anyway, the real moral was and is, and I believe it was something I also read here sometime ago, buy top quality, buy once. Buy cheap stuff, you may find yourself buying again becuase your just not satisfied with the sound and that, in the end, costs more.
