Lexicon Alpha random low/distorted left output.

The other day I powered up my "system" and played a track and noticed the left monitor was very quiet. The right with the same gain setting was much louder. After narrowing it down, I came to the conclusion it is a hardware issue on the alpha. I used the rca outs and some adapters to make sure it wasn't just the TRS out. Same thing; still much quieter than the right output.

The next day I powered on my system played a song and they were balanced again (or it sounded like it.) However, it happened again. It seems to be pretty much random. Nothing every gets moved or bumped.

So I'm assuming it's something in the Alpha's "board" that affects strictly the left output. I found the routing diagram online (attached) however, I'm not techy enough to figure out what needs to be done.

I'd love any suggestions as this issue is driving me absolutely insane.

Thanks in advance,

Casey

A while back I was researching my first interface. I heard about the Lexicon Omega (close to the alpha), and almost bought it until I read a bit more on them.
Basically, some of Lexicons products are like a box of chocolates, you never know if your going to get a good one.
People complain about them having issues with the internals, making them unusable. Other people have gotten ones that work well without a problem.
I believe they offer some type of refund if they go bad internally, but I'm not sure.
It could also just be something in your computer that is causing it (if your routing your monitors into the computer for example, look in preferences to see if the audio is panned to the middle. I've had that happen a few times where it does it randomly.)
If you can fix it (if the internals are bad), go for it. I don't have much experience on that end of things. :)

Let us know how it goes. :D

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I've tried damn near everything; checking balance on the computer, panning, uninstalling and re installing both the Lexicon drivers and the USB Audio driver...basically the works. I KNOW it's the Lexicon and something with the left output signal routing. The monitors work flawlessly when I hook them up to the computer soundcard. I've had it for a year or so and nothing has ever happened like this. And because it works fine sometimes, I'm pretty sure it's fixable.

It sounds like a bad cable or malfunctioning unit. I have heard of issues with the Alpha. Had one myself for a few months, no problems like yours, but moved on quickly due to what I had heard.

Is it under warranty still?

Unfortunately no, about 3 months past...go figure.

Bummer dood.... I feel for ya. Do this:

Take it out to the backyard and set it down gently. Light a candle. Set up a video camera aimed at the interface. Find a baseball bat, wood or aluminum-don't matter. Borrow one from a neighborhood kid if you don't have one of your own. Use the bat to take out all your frustrations on the Lexi. Smash it until it cannot ever cause another human pain again. Clean up your mess, then burn it in a 55 gallon drum. Make sure to post the video so we can all enjoy it here.

Next, go buy a Tascam interface. :)

Not a bad idea...

Took your advice as I couldn't take the heart ache anymore...Tascam interface should be here Tuesday, a Youtube video will follow immediately thereafter.

Well played my friend. Well played.

So what did you get? Feel free to ask if you have any questions. :)

Went with the US600. I record almost strictly vocals, maybe a bass from time to time so I never have more then a few inputs. Had some pretty good reviews and figured it'd be a nice upgrade from the Lexicon...which shouldn't be too hard. Any experience with the 600?

Not first hand with that unit. I did some testing of the discontinued US800 here in the forum, after many were having issues with W7. It cosmetically looks the same. I have not heard of any issue regarding the 600.

Oh, and I wasn't able to find any real problems with the US800 either, other than user error or power up procedure.

Cool, well any advice/recommendations would be awesome! RIH (Rest In Hell) Lexicon Alpha...tonight I had enough and it got stomped out like it was a actor on "American History X". It's still in one piece so a video WILL be coming. Tascam will be here tomorrow "FedEx residential delivery time". I'll let you know how much more I enjoy it compared to the Lexicon...

I am thinking more 'Office Space', but any way you feel appropriate to take out your anger is absolutely a good thing.

You will surely enjoy the Tascam over the Lexicrap. :)

Hahahahahah. I'll throw in a combo from both "for the fans" (comedy + complete hatred). I'm gonna hit you up more often than not. You seem like a reliable source.

Reliable?, maybe. Honest?, definitely.

All about a good bashing of worthless crap sold to us by supposed reputable companies like Lexicon. Throw down the hammers! :)

Well, all I can say is I wish I would have heard from you 15 months ago before I bought this worthless P.O.S. Come on, I'm coming from the Lexicon Alpha. You can give me some reliable advice!
