Ok...I am a newbie here. And I have a question. I have been recording some songs using N-Track studio. There are all finished...but i need some help..

Basically I need help with EQ levels...I think. (I dont know much about the technical stuff..so bear with me) I wish I could explain it better. Really the only place I notice my problem is in WinAmp. It has that EQ graph (im sure thats not the technical name for it) that has bars that go up and down with the music. Now with most songs...the bars are even all the way accross as they go up and down. But in my songs they dont register that high...and are very uneven. Most of the bars to the right dont even register at all. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what that means about my mix and how I fix it.

I'm new to this board, and to home recording...so if I sound like an idiot don't yell at me too much. :)

Oh...and the software I have is N-Track Studio and Sound Forge.

Thanks!

It all starts with initially getting the sound you want to tape. Then, and only then if need be should you make minor eq adjustments. If you find yourself making crazy eq adjustments you may want to re-record the part again. The spectrum in winamp is showing the eq cusrve for a ssong done in a moillion dollar stuio. You can attain similar results by using a good mic and mic pre and tracking ....(see beginning of my rant, I'm going in circles)

geek, you'll see a lot of homer stuff looking like that in the Winamp player.

Step number one: pay more attention to what it sounds like, and don't worry about the meters so much. When you listen to it through monitors and when you burn a CD of it and play it through a variety of players and when you compare it to commercial stuff of a similar type of music, does it sound bottom-heavy or lacking in top-end sparkle and clarity? If so, cut some lower end frequencies first and maybe try some slight and judicious upper end boosts...

Another actioned packed night, huh Gidge?

Post the mp3 -- we'll have a party

Im bringing the beer, whos bringing the ho's?.....

an mp3 clip, even as sonically challenged as mp3's are, will give us an idea what the mix is lacking....any EQ recommendations without one would be careless and blind....

Im off to listen....

a type of music, it started when the "post hardcore/emo scene was big in d.c." fugazi helped start this term off, now it means something completeley different, now it is a loose term for indie pop basically, with wining vox and has more to do with how you dress than anything.. anyhoo.

Yo, where are 'dem ho's??? I'll listen tonight....I got a little side tracked last night. (13 moth old with insomnia)

yes...that was a pretty good definition of emo. basically it's a bunch of former punk rockers who cry alot and write indie music now. its become almost a fad...but ah well...

anyone listen to the mp3's?

I listened on headphones, but am withholding comment until I can listen on my monitors...

I suggest just listening to "112 Howard Avenue" and "Moving On". I have just finished recording a handful of other songs and will post them up soon, and they also include remixings of "Sunday Morning" and "Always". So I'd rather hear opinions on "112 Howard Avenue" and "Moving On" just because those are pretty much the finished deal. :)

Figures...

I downloaded "Always"...

Will bring the others home with me...

My first recordings were like that but then I added some compression.

The little winamp thing only shows the peaks in something that isn't compressed. After a little compression things seem to flaten out. Those peaks are usually are in the low freqs. A compressor brings up the average volume level of the song and flatten out those peaks.

I use N-Track and it doesnt come with any compression (just a demo version) whats a good, free compressor that I could get. And perhaps one that is easy to use...I know what compression does...I just dont really understand how to use one.

emo

emo used to be a style, a scene, but is now a trend. ham on rye is right, it started in dc with hardcore bands, but now is full swing and mis-classified. bands like dashboard confessional, jimmy eat world and even weezer are taking on the emo branding. it's a sad thing when a scene goes mainstream.

112 Howard street

good tune, nice and relaxed. i really enjoy when the guitar first enters... the harmonies are rusty, but i don't think they should be fixed. well done. i am craving a distorted guitar breakdown at the end, a powerful section. but i honor the way this song was done.

free?

Nothings for free if your an honest individual.

Recording software is very expensive...
The waves compressor is nice, so Is the compressor in t-racks
and they're reletivly inexpensive plugins.

The waves bundle will work in sound forge, I dont know about n-Track.
