This is One More Song by my band, Shryne.

This is the second mix of a demo recording we did at a rehearsal last Thursday.

The lead vocals were overdubbed later that day, as well as bass by our rhythm guitarist, I think, since our bassist wasn't there.

I did my keys and backup vocals over again at home at some point between Thursday and Saturday.

Questions and Comments appreciated!

This isn't by any means final or anything yet. I have fixed some problems with the guitars and vocals, as well as a bit on the drums, which I am not overly satisfied with yet, but I believe that's due to placement.

Thanks,

Alex

What can I do to improve on this?

Also, I've also been told that the drums are too hot by one person, and too wet by another...

Thin, wet, and hot. Sounds like some kind of climate. lol

Drums need more BOOM. I don't know if taking some hi freq out would help, or boosting the bass on them. Maybe a bit of both? It's a good song, just needs a little tweaking. Wish I could help more, but it will take someone with more knowledge than I have.

Good start though.

Ha ha ha. You don't want to know.

Two dynamic mics as overheads. The left is an Audio Technica DR-VX1, and the right is a cruddy Fender mic that came with our now dead Passport PA.
I'm very sure the AT is better than the Fender (we were running out of extra mics). It certainly louder.

They were plugged right into the mic inputs on my Delta 1010LT.

I know the mics are some of the reason it doesn't sound good, but also the placement and tuning of the drums are a problem. None of us in the band like how he tunes his snare.

I didn't have any method of monitoring the setup while placing the mics--only after did I get to hear what it sounded like. The session was for experimental purposes, and these mixed tracks will be going on our MySpace site as better-than-live demos.

Oh! I just did some experimenting with the parametric EQ. I cut out some of the lower mids on the overheads and there's a world of difference!

However, that changed a few things in the mix, and now I think I'm a bit worse off than I was before. New upload to follow.

Add whatever you cut to the instrument(s) that was affected by the cut. Unless you EQ'd across the mix, which I don't recommend.

Well, I also realized that my backup vocals were too bassy sounding, so I had to cut those. I'll give the mix another listen now that I've not been listening to it for an hour.
