I never said anything about my approach to
my Rumble solo, so thought I would... Backing track was in F minor and major. I capo’d at the first fret and played in E, so my discussion here is in that same key. As I was working it out I jotted down a rough sketch of my ideas as they were occurring to me, so I’ve included that below. The solo's
here if you want to hear it.
In measures 1-6 I just outlined an E minor arpeggio, adding some chromatic “flicks” for variety, then an E melodic minor scale to intensify the run up to a high point at the end of the passage.
Measures 6-9 started with G major triad arpeggio tones ornamented in a similar way, then a simple chord-based tremolo at the end to get more aggressive with the volume and range to try to draw attention away from the keyboard part.
Measures 10-13 were just arpeggio tones again, keeping the motivic use of the chromatic “flicks” to add artificial complexity (ha), then a slurred G major scale descending in triplet 16ths to end the phrase with more rhythmic intensity.
Measures 14-17 are a recap of bars 2-5.
Then a measure of transition to E major where I just stumbled around with ascending arpeggios and tried to land somewhere that wouldn’t be too awkward to escape from.
In measures 19-26 I paraphrased another piece, El Colibri, using repeated notes on chord tones in the key of E major (though Colibri’s in E minor), sliding from one to another and adding a few of the same chromatic quick flicks to give the illusion that my ideas were somehow stylistically unified throughout.
Did 4 takes and used parts of each in the editing. Arranging took about an hour, same for tracking/editing.
