I'm downloading the contest right now, so I'll get around to it some time this weekend. I'll have to listen to the cheesieness of the tunes before I can decide on my solo approach though! :)
Missed that one...

Anticipation abating...

Back to work.

Point of order! I'd like to respectfully remind the obviously very dexterous Mr. Finster that an analytical description of the solo's tonal orientation is to be weighed as part of the competition.

No, sorry, that was merely a request, not a rule; I only made one rule, which was you had to use part of the sample track.

Although now that I think about it, I did make a second rule, which was that the winner had to be determining solely by arguing.

This could be a long thread ;)

The winner is the first one to call the other a nazi/fascist/communist? :)

Well, that's gonna shut apl's mouth! Nicely done!
Well it sure shut mine...and I hadn't opened it yet............... :D Just so as not to be a copycat....Done nicely........... :)

Maybe there should be a division for musicians that can name the modes and the rest of us who just fake it.

Oh God ... not the "M" word again!

.....as previously stated elsewhere, I only know one scale in one position.. the rest is dependent on blind luck... and the fact that I usually play the same notes all the time. I prefer rhythm, even though I wish I could shred (I'd settle for an awesome feel...)

You guys have at it. I'll just enjoy the output....

Anybody else have their solo nearly ready to post?

Mine'll be up tonight unless I get more interruptions. I'm planning to call it "Cheap Variations for YPP-15 and Reluctant Classical Guitar". What I've got isn't actually "variations", but that title sounds better than other ideas I had so I'll stick with it.

My stylistic influences for it are two composers who are both guilty of being cheesy... Mauro Giuliani, a 19th century Italian guitarist and 20th Century Argentine composer Julio Sagreras.

Mine is another day off or so . . . stupid second job :(

Here's my solo. It's the last item on the right side of the page.

http://www.timothylawler.com/page3.html

Beyer M160 mic 2 ft from bridge, aimed just to R of soundhole, GR pre, Lucid converter. Recorded mono. 16x12x11 room. Yamaha part EQ'd -3 dB @ 450 Hz to make room for the body of the guitar's tone. A tiny bit of stereo reverb added just sent from guitar. Parts panned to center. Mix hit w/Waves Lin multiband comp on lows and low mids, 1 or 2 dB gain reduction at peaks.

Yamaha part is in F minor/major. Capo'd guitar at first fret, played in E.

I liked the stutery 16th note feel to it.

Thanks Chris.

When I was tinkering with the YPP part to get ideas I was wishing that it was a little faster, which would have suited the 16th note figuring for the solo I had in mind. I think the push/pull thing with the 16ths happened because I was subconsciously trying and make the YPP speed up. But really, it made it easier to stay with the tempo changes in the YPP's part.

That was nice! The push/pull thing added some tension and made it interesting. It could have been a much longer piece without getting boring.
I bow down to your chops! :D

Thanks for listening to it Rokket.

Just made a slight mix adjustment to it a few minutes ago after listening to it on my laptop's micro speakers.

Very good. I like how you solved the trickier aspects of integrating the guitar with a keyboard part that didn't leave much room. I played around with that piece Saturday and gave up. The high register tremolo was just the ticket.

You should have felt free to change tempo, change pitch, whatever you needed to do . . .

Thanks mshilarious.

Yeah, I thought about that but I liked the challenge of playing along with the original. After I stumbled across a couple of sustainable rhythmic figures that seemed to work and sketched out where I wanted the line to go, it all went pretty quick. Just took 4 takes.

Hey that was really great Tim. Hats off. I listened to that piece once and decided to pass on it because of all the tempo fluctuation, but you pulled it off very well. I loved the little ornament on the ending chord.
